This excerpt is from Noble Damien Jack.
Prince Hall filed multiple petitions in Massachusetts to end slavery. He fought for equal education for Black children and established a school in his home.
MW Lewis Hayden and his wife presided over the Temple of Refuge, a stop in the Underground Railroad. He opened a clothing store, clothed runaway slaves, and saved over 100 slaves.
MW James E. Shephard, after founding North Carolina Central University, went before the General Assembly and used the avenue of economic savings for the state to grant him permission to open a graduate school.
MW John Wesley Dobbs assisted Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ray Sprigle around Georgia introducing him to sharecroppers, lynching family victims and segregated schools in order for him to experience life in the south.
What do these men have in common? They used Masonry as a vehicle to fight for and promote social justice.
From the Good Trouble of Bro. John Lewis, financially assisting Bro. Thurgood Marshall during the Brown vs. Board of Education case, to opening the Lodge in Columbus, Ga for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to speak, Prince Hall Masonry has been a vehicle for social justice.
Let me repeat that, a VEHICLE, NOT the purpose. They did these things when Social Activism was not seen as something political.
When we speak of Prince Hall Masonry, we speak of these honorable men, countless others for their integrity, actions, and characters. They knew when they left the sacred retreat of the lodge, they had to mix again with the world.
What are we seeing now when we mix again with the world? When we advertise and promote Masonry, and the question is asked of us what we are doing in our communities, what will we tell them? There are those in this world who truly believe we depict the picture you see before you, that we only concern ourselves with what's on the inside and not what's going on outside.
If we were to promote Brotherly Love, would we not stand against the injustices we see? AGAIN, this is NOT the purpose of Masonry, but if those who came before us can use this beloved organization as a VEHICLE and PLATFORM for the betterment of our people.
I leave you with this: Certain branches of Masonry speak to injustice, persecution, and ignorance. They speak to Justice and defending those who can't defend themselves. Is that something truly done, or just words on paper?
