EXEMPLARY NON-PROFIT PARTNER AWARD
The Black Star Project

Some organizations work for Chicago’s young people. The Black Star Project also gives that work a place on the air.

Founded by the late Phil Jackson and led by Executive Director Gloria Smith, The Black Star Project focuses on youth development, academic excellence, mentoring, and community empowerment in Chicago.

On CAN TV’s Channel 21, it sponsors Black Star Still Rising, a community program hosted and executive produced by Stephen “Silver” Carter. The show features community discussions, educational segments, and local activism updates, with guests like Cortez Watson, the Project’s Program Director, discussing initiatives, educational tools, and civic engagement.

We’re proud to present our Exemplary Non-Profit Partner Award to an organization that brings learning, history, and community to CAN TV viewers. Join us in honoring them on November 12.

Tonight on The Journey Continues, hosts Monica Fox and Sara Jane Charles welcome Christine McQueen, mother of a pediatric kidney transplant recipient and illustrator of the children’s book Keep Those Kidneys Happy with Sadie Tucker. Christine reflects on guiding her daughter through transplant, navigating the move from pediatric to adult care, and turning her family’s journey into a story for children.

The episode also honors John Lefferts in the Donor Spotlight, whose gift of life touched 37 lives.
