JOIN US TOMORROW! Keshia Golden is scheduled for trial tomorrow, August 24th. She's been fighting for her freedom for nearly 4 years, with the threat of up to 60 years in prison looming over her the entire time. Whatever the resolution of this case, we must continue demanding dismissed charges, and pardons for those who have been convicted.

Beyond this, we must understand that the criminal legal response to gender based violence has made us less safe, have moved us farther from a world in which we entitle boys to violence, and expect girls to magically avoid it, or to feel blamed when they are harmed. No More.

These tragedies are rare, but prosecuting moms for the outcomes of untreated or ineffectively treated postpartum depression, psychosis and other mental illness, only makes it less likely that families will seek help. Prosecution, as in the case of survivors charged for the outcomes of self-defense, only makes us less safe.

"When we look at the research that goes into women's health, it is 6 percent of the investment.

Women deserve so much more, because, when we can get women and families better, right, we get mom better, we take care better of baby family, the whole family unit, and that has reverberations into the community and honestly into the economy. So these things matter tremendously.

What I also want people to know is that these are treatable illnesses, whether it's postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety and OCD, or postpartum psychosis. There are treatments and people do get better."

Join DV advocates and community organizations on Tuesday, August 18th, 11am, Daley Plaza, as we make our final public appeal to State's Attorney Burke to dismiss charges against Keshia Golden, a Chicago mom charged with first degree murder for the outcome of an act of self-defense.

Help us send the message to State's Attorney Burke that victims don't stop being victims when they take action in self-defense, and prosecuting them as "murderers" sends the message that they had no legal right to defend their lives, and more broadly, that their lives are not worth protecting. This is unacceptable.

"Responses to violence that are truly trauma-informed should take place outside jail walls, said Krig, with Moms United Against Violence and Incarceration. “We should be thinking, ‘What are the things that actually need to be met upstream of criminalization?’’’ she said. “How can we think about risk assessment in terms of how people experience poverty and abuse and addiction? How do we support people in community settings?"

Cook County wants to create an oasis inside the infamous jail. But the renovation will do little to address the harm of incarceration itself
