Friday Q&A — Ask Natasha edition.

Drop your summer garden questions in the comments. Watering schedules, pest problems, mystery plants, what to do when your basil looks sad — I'll answer the best ones live tomorrow morning.

Beginner questions especially welcome. There are no dumb questions in this garden. There's only not asking and then losing the tomato plant.

Throwback Thursday: the summer we planted way too much squash.

Year two of the farm, 2017. We had bed space and ambition and a seed packet that said "plant 3-4 feet apart" that we absolutely did not read carefully. By August we had squash up to our noses. The ding d**g ditch of zucchini was ALIVE that year.

The folks who got our surplus zukes? They are now volunteers!

Some mistakes are just slow introductions. 🌱

Let's talk about watering — because I see a lot of wilting plants that are not actually thirsty.

On a hot day, some plants (tomatoes especially) will droop in the afternoon heat as a protective response. That is not dehydration — that is a plant doing its job. Check the soil two inches down before you reach for the hose. If it's moist, leave it alone.

This is why that mulch we talked about yesterday is so important!

Water in the morning, at the base, deeply and infrequently. That's the whole system.

Mulch. I cannot say this enough.

If you do one thing this week, lay two to three inches of mulch over your beds. It holds moisture, regulates soil temperature, and cuts your watering time in half during a heat spike. We use wood chip mulch from our city's tree program — free, local, and it breaks down into the soil over time.

Do not skip this step. Your plants will not forgive a July heat wave without it.

June 1st. Summer is not coming — it is here.

This is the month your garden will test you. Heat waves. Dry spells. That one squash that looks fine until it doesn't. We're going to walk through all of it together.

All month we've got heat tips, pollinator love, Juneteenth in the garden, summer solstice, and a community spotlight series that I'm really proud of. Stay close.

May was a big month. We turned 10. We composted. We volunteered at Soldier Field. We planted, we taught, we showed up.

Thank you to every person who liked, shared, commented, signed up, donated, attended a workshop, or just lurked quietly. (Especially the lurkers. I see you.)

June: more workshops, the start of harvest season, and a community day we're going to announce next week. Stay close.

Until then — water deeply, plant boldly, and keep your hands in the dirt. We'll be here. 🌱

It's late May, which means it's also time to start thinking about your fall garden. Seriously. What are you starting indoors NOW for late-summer transplant? We will be prepping for garlic soon, and more cool weather crops, cross your fingers.

May highlights: 10-year anniversary, ICAW, two nights at Soldier Field, transplant season, World Bee Day, Mother's Day. We did all of that AND planted about 200 seedlings. How was your month? 🌱
