✊🏽 Tenant power is growing across Illinois!

We're taking a moment to look back at the incredible Inaugural Tenant Governance Convocation, because wow was it an incredible day! Tenant leaders from across the state came together to strengthen our movement and build a shared vision for what tenant leadership can look like.

We’re proud of every tenant leader who stepped up, took on new responsibilities, and committed to building power in their buildings and communities.

Can't wait to do this again, we are just getting started!

While the City of Chicago and Mayor's Office contiued to turn their back and ignore Ms. C and other low income tenants despite their 'progressive rhetoric' JASC and Ms. C never backed down becuase we do not cower to the developer class we fight for what is right and just and we win!

We aren't going anywhere, we are here to back up other tenants just like Ms. C and stand up for the high quality housing they deserve!

⚡️ WELCOME TO FAST FACT FRIDAY! ⚡️

Every Friday, we’ll be sharing one fun or fearsome fact about housing. Because whether the facts are fun or downright horrifying, the more we know, the more we can work to change it.

🏠 TODAYS FACT: Chicago is short roughly 120,000 affordable housing units.
And more than half of Chicago renters are considered cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing.

That’s not a niche problem. That’s the reality for the majority of renters in Chicago.
When a housing market isn’t building enough homes that the people who live here can actually afford, the consequences aren’t abstract, they’re felt by our neighbors, our families, and our communities.

Follow along every Friday for another Fast Fact ⚡️

🎉 Tenant leaders from across the state came together this weekend, and the energy said it all.

From Chicago to Waukegan to Auroa, tenant leaders sat down together to build the roadmap for tenant governance: new roles, new commitments, and a shared plan for the work ahead. This is what it looks like when tenants don't just show up to organizing, they lead it.

Huge thanks to every leader who signed on, showed up, and stepped into these roles. This is just the beginning. 💪

Ms. C is not backing down!

She deserves to be recertified and is calling in back up from her neighbors and tenant allies across the city to support her legal right to be recertified and remain housed. She is calling on Mayor Johnson and the DoH to intervene and ensure she is able to recertify! Chicago Mayor's Office Chicago Department of Housing

🔔 CAMPAIGN UPDATE 🔔

Tenants at Fox Shore Apartments brought their issues of inadequate relocation, egregious conditions and evidence of deficient asbestos abatement in their units and building to their elected officials and demanded action. Their elected officials and the Mayor of Aurora were equally displeased and brought Essence Development to the table to layout a clear and coherent plan moving forward. Additionally tenants were finally able to secure reimbursement commitments from Essence and a process for submitting the requests for all the costs they have edured during this long and burdensome displacement
