Ignatian Spirituality Project Founded in 1998 in Chicago by Fr.

The Ignatian Spirituality Project invites people recovering from homelessness and addiction to experience God's love, hope and healing through spiritual companionship that transforms lives. Bill Creed, SJ, and Ed Shurna (then-Executive Director of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless), the Ignatian Spirituality Project (ISP) is a Jesuit ministry which invites people recovering from homelessness and addiction to encounter God’s love, hope and healing through spiritual companionship that transforms lives. To achieve this mission, ISP has created a successful program model, including overnight retreats, follow up Days of Reflection, and ongoing accompaniment programs that care for the interior and spiritual lives of our target population. Retreats were originally offered to men and women in the Chicago area; over time ISP has become a network of 28 cities across the United States, Canada, and Ireland. As the only organization of its kind to offer Ignatian retreats to those on the margins, ISP plays a unique role in the continuum of care for men and women recovering from homelessness and addiction. Through a seamless blend of Ignatian and 12-step recovery spirituality, ISP’s retreat programs foster a spark of hope and possibility for change. Strengthened spiritual and community connections help participants rediscover their inherent worth and dignity, empowering them to strive to reach goals and access services to move them out of poverty. Our lean Network office headquartered in Chicago employs 8 full-time and 2 part-time staff members; 4 full-time Regional Directors support the over 700 volunteers in execution of the program and development of ongoing training and formation for all volunteers, particularly retreat alumni. Our success over the past 20+ years demonstrates that hope and healing experienced on our retreats leads to the empowerment of participants to access further and longer-lasting transformation, including housing stability, ongoing sobriety, and increase in education and job attainment.

THANK YOU to everyone who gave on Open Doors Giving Day. We're now above 75% of the way to our $18,000 goal, with about $4,500 to go.

Somewhere, someone in early recovery is waiting for exactly this chance to start over. A door to hope, a door to healing, a door to believing a better future is possible.

Every gift is doubled by our match. With it, $250 covers room and board for two people on a retreat, and $500 covers four.

There are still doors to open. Join us: ispretreats.org/givingday

What a day! You've been opening doors since this morning, and together we're past the halfway mark. We're SO grateful, and it's not too late to help us get the rest of the way.

Your gifts go to the retreats and spiritual reflection circles ISP will hold this fall, at no cost to the people who take part. That's where Angie found she wasn't alone on her journey, and where Reggie found a place to heal his spirit. Someone sleeping in a shelter tonight will be in one of those circles.

The day isn't over, and every gift counts twice: ispretreats.org/givingday

Thank you for walking with us 🙏

Thirty years. That’s how long Reggie spent in and out of recovery before his first ISP experience.

“I wondered why I kept going back, six months here, six months there. My spirit was sick and needed to be healed. I didn’t know how, and I didn’t know how to reach the resources that would heal it.”

At his first Ignatian Spirituality Project retreat, Reggie found healing, hope, and a new purpose.

This is why ISP exists: a place to be heard, to make sense of your story, and, as Reggie would put it, to heal your spirit. Today, he’s a volunteer facilitator and an Ambassador of Hope in Chicago.

People have been opening doors all morning. Will you join them?

Thanks to a generous ISP supporter, every gift today is doubled. A gift of $250 covers room and board for one person on a retreat. With the match, it covers two.

"A spiritual community is different than the other types of support, because it's a spiritual family. It is not judgmental to me."

That's Angie, in Detroit, on what she found at her first ISP retreat. Two minutes, in her own words, on Open Doors Giving Day.

Every gift today is matched, dollar for dollar: ispretreats.org/givingday

Today is ISP's Open Doors Giving Day. Angie, in Detroit, knew she was ready, but she didn't know how to begin.

For a long time, alcohol was how she got away from everything. Then a door opened: her first ISP retreat. The most beautiful moment, she says, was realizing that God hadn't left her.

"My eyes opened, and I saw God in the small, everyday things: the sun when I stepped outside, birds in the trees. I belonged, and I wasn't alone on my journey."

She goes back to the retreats now, to give. She makes bracelets for the women who come, small reminders that they are seen.

Every gift today is matched, dollar for dollar. Together we're raising $18,000 to make this fall's retreats and spiritual reflection circles possible, at no cost to the people who take part.

A gift of $250 covers room and board for one person on a retreat. With the match, it covers two, and someone on the waiting list gets a seat. Some of you have already opened a door: early gifts have us 10% of the way there. Thank you!

"When I left, I felt like a different person. I had found serenity."

Michelle was living in a shelter in Cleveland when a woman who worked there invited her on an ISP retreat. That was 18 years ago. Today she facilitates retreats for others.

Somebody opened that door for her.

Tomorrow, Thursday, September 24, is ISP's Open Doors Giving Day, and your gift opens the next one. Together we're raising $18,000 for the retreats and reflection circles ISP will hold this fall, at no cost to the people who take part. At $250 a seat, that's 72.

This year a generous supporter has offered to match every gift, dollar for dollar. Your gift will go twice as far, and 72 seats become 144.

More details tomorrow. If you'd rather give early, today's gifts are matched too: ispretreats.org/givingday

In honor of National Recovery Month, the Ignatian Spirituality Project has published "No One Heals Alone: Six Movements on the Journey of Recovery," a special feature connecting stories from those in recovery with the Spiritual Exercises, the 12 Step tradition, along with findings from scientific research. Whether or not recovery is part of your own story, discover why recovery is much more than sobriety—it can be a spiritual path for all of us.

How do we heal? How do we begin again?

Recovery teaches something all of us need to learn at some point in our lives.

September is National Recovery Month, and our special feature "No One Heals Alone: Six Movements on the Journey of Recovery" is now open in full. All six movements are there. Walk the journey at your own pace.

The wisdom here is old. Ignatian spirituality has carried it for five centuries, the Twelve Steps for nearly a century, and the research now backs it. And the people who live it are the teachers.

For more than a quarter of a century, thousands of people rebuilding their lives after homelessness and addiction have walked the road of recovery with ISP. Most of us will recognize more of the road than we expect.
