Thy Nguyen, VP of Impact and Advocacy, provided public comment at the City of Chicago's Transportation and Public Way Committee meeting held Wednesday, October 7, 2026. CASL was proud to add their voice in support of the resolution introduced by Ald. Nicole Lee opposing the proposed Amtrak Midwest Maintenance Facility at the Union Pacific Canal Yard.

Nguyen reiterated his disappointment in Amtrak leadership's responses to community concerns and called on the City to convene another public meeting on Amtrak’s site selection process, environmental review, and the possible effects on nearby communities.

Thank you to the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services () for visiting CASL last week.

First Deputy Commissioner Harley Jones, Deputy Commissioner Danny Castaneda, Director of Family Support Programs Dan Cassell, and Chief Analytics Analyst Deanna Kohlberg-Shah toured our programs and met with our team to learn how DFSS-funded services show up in the community.

We covered CCAP, afterschool, caregiver support services, and Preschool for All, and talked openly about where funding and family needs don't line up. Families' needs are continuous. Funding streams are not. Conversations like this one can help close that gap.

DFSS is a key partner in making CASL's services possible. We're grateful for their time, their questions, and their commitment to working with us on solutions that serve Chicago families.

This fall, CASL staff connected with organizations across the city and the world to discuss new topics and challenges facing social services, funding, and the communities we serve.

A few highlights:
→ Hosted a delegation from Shanghai's Social Services Committee for a full agency tour and overview of our Brain Health, centralized intake, and expansion of services
→ Rachael Wright joined a panel on nonprofit business diversification at the Coalition of Limited English Speaking Elderly's (CLESE) Annual Member Meeting
→ Alex Montgomery shared CASL's data journey at Provisio Partners' "Fueling the Cause" event alongside Hope Ignites
→ Karina Kidder spoke on building trust in behavioral health at the 2026 Cook County Behavioral Health Summit, hosted by Cook County Health
→ Gina Hardee stood with coalition partners and elected officials — including Illinois State Rep. Theresa Mah and State Sen. Graciela Guzmán — at a press conference for adult education funding
→ Dr. Chunping Huang joined Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine's Alliance for Research with Chicagoland Communities (ARCC) steering committee

For Su***de Prevention Month, a look back at CASL's "Happy Companions" workshop series at Chinatown Elderly Apartments.

Led by Behavioral Health Case Manager Ms. Cheng, LSW, nearly 50 older adults attended each of two sessions in March. The focus: what makes later life feel good — food, family, connection, purpose — and how to recognize when something's off, in themselves or a friend.

Participants practiced real conversations through role-play, learning how to check in on someone who might be struggling. The workshop also tackled a harder truth head-on: having a thought like "I don't want to be here anymore" is more common than people realize, and saying it out loud lowers risk rather than raising it.

The sessions built a lasting bridge between CASL and the building's residents and staff — and CASL is exploring how to reach even more residents through this partnership.

Sending gratitude to Cathay Bank for their long-term support for CASL and the community we serve! We hope this partnership continues as we help more people with their financial well-being.

Cathay Bank recently provided a grant of $25,000 to the Chinese American Service League (CASL) in Chicago to enhance financial education and credit-building resources for local residents.

This funding will enable CASL to offer twelve multilingual financial literacy workshops and assist clients with low credit scores in improving their overall financial well-being. Through expanded access to practical financial education and resources, participants will be better equipped to make informed financial decisions, build credit, and achieve long-term financial stability.

Together, Cathay and CASL are helping empower community members with the knowledge and tools needed to build a stronger financial future.
