Unionizing should raise standards. It should never be used as an excuse to slash a worker’s paycheck.

For years, PAs on Chicago Fire and Chicago Med received 12- and 14-hour daily guarantees written into their deal memos. After they unionized, suddenly they were cut to 8 hours.

The change was never proposed or discussed during negotiations. Local 724 never agreed to it. Some PAs have already lost up to 25% of their weekly pay.

That contrast should set off every union-busting alarm. Employers cannot unilaterally make changes without bargaining.

NBCUniversal can fix this now. Restore the guarantees. Make the affected PAs whole. Respect the workers who make these shows possible.

Chicago is a union city, and PAs are claiming their place in it.

Production Assistants on Chicago Fire and Chicago Med have ratified their first union contracts with Production Assistants United and LiUNA Local 724.

These contracts mean pension coverage, health coverage, union representation, enforceable standards, and real momentum for PA organizing in Chicago.

The rates are too low. The hours are brutal. Nobody knows who to go to when something crosses a line. Everyone is exhausted, but everyone is also acting like that’s just how it has to be.
