We are mourning the loss of Bea Lumpkin, who died June 15, 2026, at 107 years old.

Bea was a tenured mathematics professor at Malcolm X College and a proud member of Local 1600 and the Chicago Teachers Union. She came to teaching after years of blue-collar work in laundries, machine shops, and assembly lines — and she brought that working-class perspective into everything she did. She authored books, published scholarship, and shaped countless lives in the classroom.

But Bea's impact stretched far beyond education. She was a fierce union advocate, a co-founder of the Coalition of Labor Union Women in 1974, and a fixture on picket lines for decades. She chaired the Wisconsin Steel Workers Women's Committee alongside her husband Frank as he led a 17-year fight for justice after Wisconsin Steel closed without paying its workers. She joined Chicago teachers on strike. She stood with Wisconsin public employees fighting for collective bargaining rights.

She wrote about all of it in her autobiography, Joy in the Struggle: My Life and Love — a title that said everything about who she was.
Bea Lumpkin is survived by her children and grandchildren. Her legacy lives on in every student she taught and every activist she inspired.

Every student deserves a college that’s built to last. That starts with investing in the people who teach, advise, support, and serve them every day.

We’re marching for the future of the institution we care about and the community we serve.

👀 Big congratulations to Halle Morrison, Assistant Professor at Malcolm X College and Cook County College Teachers Union member, for being selected to join the STEMSEAS (STEM Student Experiences Aboard Ships) expedition! 🚢

Halle will represent Malcolm X College and educators nationwide aboard the R/V Sally Ride, gaining hands-on experience collecting oceanographic data, operating advanced instruments, and conducting real-time research at sea.

This opportunity is a win for her students and college as well. The knowledge she will bring back will help open doors for more community college students to explore careers in science.

We love to see it!

Pride month is a celebration of courage, identity, and love. It's also a call to action.

IFT is committed to supporting our LGBTQIA+ members, students, families and communities every day.

We know that strong schools and workplaces are built on respect, safety, and belonging. Everyone deserves to work in an environment where they can show up as their full, authentic self. Every student deserves to learn in a space where they are seen, affirmed, and protected.

Pride began as a protest: a legacy reminds us that progress is never guaranteed. Rather, it’s built through solidarity, collective action, and through the unwavering belief that everyone deserves to be treated with respect.

This month and always, we stand united in that belief.

Happy Pride Month!

Illinois has one of the lowest numbers of state workers per capita in the country, and communities are feeling it.

At the same time, lawmakers are advancing megaproject tax breaks that let corporations pay less—while public services go underfunded.

With real revenue, we can rebuild the workforce, ensure efficient services, and strengthen the safety nets our communities depend on.

It’s time to fund what works. Tell lawmakers: https://bit.ly/tax-the-ultra-wealthy
