Today the Legacy Project commemorates the death of gay French philosopher, social theorist, historian of ideas, and literary critic MICHEL FOUCAULT (The History of S*xuality, Madness and Civilization, The Order of Things). ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (1973): UPSTAIRS LOUNGE FIRE
An arsonist fire was set at the Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans, LA on June 24, 1973. Because of burglar bars on the windows, 32 LGBT patrons died. The disaster was mostly met with indifference by city residents. Some of the bodies were never identified because families were too ashamed to claim them. Today the Legacy Project celebrates the birth of gay British mathematician, scientist, logician, and naval cryptologist ALAN TURING. For using his “Turing Methodology” to crack the N**i Enigma Code and devising the reigning test for when a machine becomes self-aware, Turing is considered “The Father” of both Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. He was born on June 23, 1912 in London, England. Alan Turing – whose life inspired the creation of the Legacy Walk – has his own a bronze memorial at 3345 N. Halsted. BEFORE DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL…
Today the Legacy Project commemorates the death of Vietnam Air Force SGT. LEONARD MATLOVICH – the first gay service member to purposely out himself in order to challenge the military’s ban on g**s serving openly. Matlovich was a veteran of three tours in Vietnam, a recipient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He died on June 22, 1988 in West Hollywood, CA at the age of 44 from an AIDS-related illness. Thanks to the generosity and vision of James Darby and his husband Patrick Bova, Matlovich he was also among the inaugural inductees to Chicago’s Legacy Walk in 2012. Today the Legacy Project commemorates the death of modernist writer Djuna Barnes (Ladies Almanac, and Nightwood – which is often considered her masterpiece). She was a leading figure in bohemian Paris of the 1930s and a member of the group known as “The Literary Women of the Left Bank.” She died in relative seclusion on June 18, 1982 at the age of 90 in New York City.
