Today is the national giving day for donor-advised funds—the fastest-growing form of philanthropy in the country. But why do so many people choose to give through DAFs?

Do you know how we are helping your state?

Every year, we strive to grant more money back to each state than we receive from that state in donations. This year, we will grant nearly $11.7 million to the state Elks associations.

These grants help fund the state Elks associations' major charitable projects, which include aid for people with disabilities, cancer research, children's hospitals, youth camps, and so much more.

The state associations also use these grants to fund their Elks Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, Drug Awareness, scholarship and veterans service programs, as well as other charitable and philanthropic projects.

We’ve been helping Elks build stronger communities since 1928, when founder and Past National President John F. Malley set out to build a “temple of philanthropy” that would “unite the forces of the Order into a mighty army for the service of humankind.”

But how do we do this? By investing in the communities where Elks live and work.

This fiscal year, we've allocated $53.8 million to improve the quality of life in local Elks communities, help the state Elks associations accomplish their charitable objectives, meet the needs of today's veterans, provide our youth with lifelong skills, and more.

Calling all high school seniors: The application for the 2027 Most Valuable Student scholarship contest is currently open!

We will award 500 scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $30,000 over four years. No relation to the Elks is necessary to apply.

With this scholarship, students gain more than just financial aid—they gain an appreciation of service, a network of like-minded peers, and an for life.

In partnership with New Horizons of Southwest Florida, Bonita Springs-Estero, Fla., Lodge No. 2753 uses a Beacon Grant from the Community Investments Program to support students whose families are living below poverty level.

Members of the Lodge help the students with homework and lead workshops about interviewing for jobs, crafting, science experiments and more. The Lodge also purchases VR headsets to allow the students to virtually visit museums and other educational sites to enrich the program.

“Education is the key to providing an independent life,” says Grants Coordinator Judith MacGregor. “For many consecutive years, 100% of the children in this program have graduated high school, which is an outstanding achievement.”

Almost 100 years ago, following the completion of the Elks National Memorial and Headquarters, then-Grand Exalted Ruler John F. Malley dreamt of building “a more stately mansion...with a dome so vast that it will cover the entire nation.” However, this mansion was not constructed of bricks and mortar—it was an idea.

Malley envisioned a “mighty army for the service of mankind” who would “extend help freely and perform their deeds with a pleasant smile.”

The Elks National Foundation is the realization of Malley’s dream.

Open to children ages 8 to 13, the Elks Hoop Shoot helps kids develop grit, determination and perseverance while having plenty of fun along the way!

No connection to the Elks is needed to participate in a Lodge Hoop Shoot contest, but all competitors must share one thing—the courage to try.
