A few years ago, this keyboard found its way into our organization. It has served its purpose, sat quietly through different seasons, and waited for the right home.

A few weeks back, it found one.

Meet Aeron.

His mom shared that he is largely self-taught and has taught himself to play multiple instruments. As I've watched him, I've been amazed by his curiosity, dedication, and natural musical ability. Sometimes all a young person needs is access to an opportunity and someone who believes in them.

We were honored to gift this keyboard to him so he can continue developing his talent outside of our program.

Now, I'm putting out a community call.

We're looking for:
🎹 A music instructor willing to help nurture a gifted young musician.
🎹 A sustain pedal compatible with his keyboard.
🎹 Anyone who has resources, connections, or opportunities that can help him continue growing in his musical journey.

Talent is a gift, but talent flourishes when a community comes alongside a young person and helps them develop it.

Today, we're celebrating Aeron. Tomorrow, who knows where his gift may take him.

If you can help, please send me a message.

This young man is finishing up his first year with us, and one thing I can always count on when he walks through the door is hearing him ask:

"Can I help with anything?"

He's in 6th grade.

Sometimes he's helping put out snacks. Sometimes he's helping set up the room. On this particular day, he asked if he could help make copies. I handed him an entire file and his response was, "That's a lot of copying!" 😂

But here's what made me smile.

One of our older teens had previously taught him how to use the copier. Now he knows how to make copies the old-school way at the machine and how to send documents through the app. What started as a simple task became an opportunity for peer leadership, skill-building, and confidence.

People often think youth development is about the big moments. The reality is that it happens in the small moments.

It's letting a young person help.
It's teaching them how to do something instead of doing it for them.
It's trusting them with responsibility.
It's creating opportunities for older youth to teach younger youth.

When we give young people chances to contribute, we send a powerful message:

"You are capable."
"You are needed."
"You can learn."

Today it was making copies.

Tomorrow it might be leading a project, mentoring another student, running a business, or leading a community.

Growth starts with opportunity.

This version highlights the 5 Cs of Positive Youth Development—especially competence, confidence, and connection—without sounding overly academic.

Project Impact 180 , we’re continuing to build off a previous Career Readiness session where our teens completed a “Reverse Bucket List” activity. 💙💛

Instead of focusing on what they HAVEN’T done yet, we challenged them to reflect on everything they HAVE already accomplished.

That conversation became the foundation for this week’s resume building session.

Many young people think they have “nothing” to put on a resume because they’ve never had a formal job. But our youth quickly realized they already have experience and transferable skills through everyday responsibilities and leadership opportunities.

✔️ Babysitting
✔️ Helping at church
✔️ Sports & extracurricular activities
✔️ Caring for siblings
✔️ Community service
✔️ Leadership programs
✔️ Supporting events and activities

The next step was teaching them how to professionally communicate those experiences.

We worked on “leveling up their language” and helping students understand how to make their resumes stand out using measurable impact and data.

Instead of:
❌ “I help at church.”

We taught them:
✅ “Supported community events serving 40+ attendees.”

Instead of:
❌ “I babysit.”

We taught them:
✅ “Provided childcare supervision and support during evenings and weekends.”

We also discussed how employers look for DETAILS:
📊 How many hours?
📊 How many years?
📊 How many people did you serve?
📊 What leadership roles did you hold?
📊 What impact did you make?

Today is normally our Life Skills Training session, but we’re continuing to build on their resumes. Students were given a take-home assignment, and during class we’ll walk through them together, use our rubric to provide peer feedback, and improve them in real time.

At Project Impact 180, we’re helping youth recognize that their experiences already matter. Resume building is more than paperwork — it’s confidence building, leadership development, and helping young people learn how to communicate their value.

Afterschool reality 😂💙

You know kids feel safe, comfortable, and at peace in your program when they kick their shoes off and make themselves at home. No pressure… just a space where they can relax, laugh, learn, and be kids after a long school day.

These little moments matter. 🫶🏾

Chicago community, we need your help! 💙💛

Project Impact 180 currently has a pipeline of over 85 youth ages 14+ who are actively seeking summer employment opportunities.

We initially had a commitment that would have allowed us to place 20 young people this summer, however that opportunity unexpectedly fell through.

Our youth are ready to work. Many have already participated in career readiness, life skills training, leadership development, and workforce preparation. They are eager for opportunities to gain experience, earn income, and stay engaged in positive environments this summer.

We are asking our village:
✔️ Businesses
✔️ Organizations
✔️ Churches
✔️ Entrepreneurs
✔️ Community leaders

If you have summer job openings, internships, paid work experiences, volunteer-to-work pipelines, or mentorship opportunities for youth ages 14 and up, please reach out or drop information below.

One opportunity can truly change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

Let’s work together to get these young people HIRED this summer! 🙌🏾
