This labor of love is so much more than a food pantry - it hosts a free store (clothing & housewares), shares its space with a free clinic and other community collaborations, loans out medical equipment, distributes 1000s of books via our outdoor free library, oversees 12+ internships/rotations, and throws wonderful bonus free events (next up - Boo Bash 9.0 on 10/18). It employs 12 local folks, greets 1000+ visitors & volunteers each week, and will distribute over $3M in services this year.
Our annual fundraiser supports two initiatives: 1) Our fresh produce supplemental budget (we currently spend $2500 a week to ensure our clients get groceries packed with healthy foods!. A private donor has a long-standing commitment to part of the veggie budget, but we are responsible for $1500 weekly). 2) A multilingual employee’s salary. We strive to provide culturally responsive registration services - we welcome clients in their preferred language, because our food insecure neighbors deserve dignity and respect. All are welcome at the Pilsen Food Pantry and we are able to communicate with them in Spanish, Cantonese, Toishanese, and English.
