As part of a lecture series for the new exhibit, "Unheard Voices of Care: Filipino Nurses in America," poet and author Dwight Okita will take guests down a twisted road, reliving the murders of eight student nurses on Chicago's South Side in 1966. Two were Filipino, with a third nurse, also Filipino, suviving the night to identify the killer in court. The excerpts are part of his new book, "The Invention of Fireflies: A Memoir of the Magical and the Monsterous," which will be published in 2027. In addition to the dramatic readings, a special guest will be a friend of the young women who lost their lives that night. Also Filipino, she was a student nurse as well and was supposed to spend the night in that house. She is scheduled to be in attendance and will answer a short Q&A.

The Chicago Public Library and invites you

Program:Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage
Author Scott Kurashige: American Peril: The Violent History of Anti-Asian Racism
Tuesday, May 19, 2026 6:00PM – 7:00PM
Harold Washington Library Center

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, CPL is pleased to welcome historian and activist Scott Kurashige to discuss his new book, American Peril: The Violent History Of Anti-Asian Racism. Scott Kurashige is an award-winning historian, author, and ethnic studies scholar whose work bridges academic research and public engagement. He is the author of The Shifting Grounds of Race, winner of the American Historical Association’s Beveridge Award, and co-author (with Grace Lee Boggs) of The Next American Revolution.

His new book, American Peril, traces more than 175 years of anti-Asian violence in the United States, from exclusion-era lynchings and U.S. military violence abroad to the surge in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a moment when immigration, nationalism, and racial violence are once again at the center of public debate, the book offers essential historical context for understanding how these dynamics have shaped American life and continue to do so today. Just as importantly, it highlights the long tradition of resistance, coalition-building, and multiracial solidarity that has emerged in response.https://chipublib.bibliocommons.com/events/69bab813567ba1dd31fdb958?utm_source=chatgpt.com
