PHA Black History Month Series; Day 2:
Bro. Jesse Owens

Born on September 12, 1913 in Oakville, Alabama, James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens was the youngest of ten children to Henry and Mary Owens. He attended local schools in Cleveland, Ohio for his early education. This is where his track and field career started when he broke the national high school record with 20.7 seconds in the 220 yards (201 m) dash, and long-jumped 24 feet 9 1/2 inches (7.56 m) at the 1933 National High School Championship in Chicago. His 100-yard dash remained the national high school record until 1967, while his 200-yard dash held the national record for 20 years. While attending Ohio State University, he won four events and established six world records in athletics at the Big Ten Championships. But what Bro. Owens is most remembered for is making history at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin by winning four gold medals, setting Olympic records in each event. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in track and field history and a trailblazer for African American athletes today.

Bro. Owens passed on March 31, 1980.
