Poor leadership rarely survives on its own. It is often sustained by enablers—individuals who excuse dysfunction, defend incompetence, ignore misconduct, and remain silent when courage and accountability are required. Enablers may claim loyalty, friendship, or unity as justification for their silence, but in reality they help preserve the very conditions that weaken organizations and damage morale. A leader who is never corrected, challenged, or held accountable will eventually mistake unchecked authority for effective leadership. Likewise, members who continuously tolerate poor decisions, inconsistency, disrespect, or neglect become participants in the decline they privately complain about.

In Freemasonry, integrity demands more than personal righteousness; it requires moral courage. True Brotherhood does not mean blindly defending every action simply because of personal relationships or political convenience. Real loyalty is rooted in truth and the desire to see both the leader and the organization succeed honorably. Sometimes the greatest act of support is honest counsel, constructive correction, or the willingness to say what others are afraid to say. Organizations grow stronger when accountability is embraced rather than avoided.

Enablers create environments where mediocrity becomes normalized, standards become compromised, and responsibility becomes optional. Wise leaders surround themselves not with flatterers and yes-men, but with individuals courageous enough to speak honestly and help preserve the integrity of the institution. Healthy organizations require both strong leadership and principled followers willing to uphold the standard even when it is uncomfortable to do so.

The truth in this edition of Words of Leadership should remind every Mason never to diminish the importance of the Grand Lodge or the obligations owed to it. In the Prince Hall system, a Mason’s standing in every other house depends entirely upon his standing within his Grand Lodge. When a man forfeits his good standing in Ancient Craft Masonry, he likewise forfeits the rights and benefits connected to the bodies that depend upon it. The foundation must always be honored, protected, and respected, because no structure can stand when disconnected from its source.

🩺💜 JUNE IS MEN’S HEALTH MONTH & NATIONAL PTSD AWARENESS MONTH 💜🩺

The Conference of Grand Masters Prince Hall Masons, Inc. encourages all men, and especially our Brothers, fathers, sons, veterans, and community leaders, to make their health a priority this month.

Strength is not measured solely by what a man can endure in silence. True strength is demonstrated when a man takes responsibility for his physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Many men face challenges related to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Too often, these battles are fought alone. We must change that narrative.

As Prince Hall Masons, we are taught to care for one another, support the distressed, and improve ourselves in mind, body, and spirit. Seeking medical care, discussing mental health concerns, and reaching out for support are not signs of weakness—they are acts of wisdom and courage.

This month, we encourage every Brother and every man to:

✔ Schedule your annual health screenings
✔ Know your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar)
✔ Prioritize physical fitness and nutrition
✔ Check on a Brother, friend, or family member
✔ Seek help if you are struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, or emotional stress
✔ Remember that you do not have to carry your burdens alone

Helpful Resources:

• National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
• National Center for PTSD (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs)
• 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline (Call or Text 988)
• Men’s Health Network
• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Men’s Health Resources
• Veterans Crisis Line (Dial 988 then Press 1)

Together, we can build stronger men, stronger families, and stronger communities.
