CHIP

CHIP is a non-profit organization that promotes a healthy community by supporting healthy children. Healthy communities start with healthy children.

CHIP provides services for children, prenatal through age six, in the focus areas of health improvement, reduction of child abuse and neglect, and school readiness. Our voluntary in-home visiting program teams a certified parent educator and a registered nurse with children and families to provide case management, home visitation, health assessments, parent support, education and referrals. Unsafe

sleeping is the #1 cause of deaths for children from one week to one year of age. In response to this tragic loss of life CHIP created the SLEEPTIGHT campaign to provide an opportunity for any low-income parent in the region to attend a one hour safe-sleeping educational program and to receive a crib at no cost. CHIP also provides expecting mothers and children in Hampton Roads with health insurance enrollment assistance. We help every child have a healthy, loving start, so they enter school ready to learn and succeed. CHIP's major community annual fundraiser is the Hampton Roads Rubber Duck Race occurring the fourth Saturday in April. http://hamptonroadsduckrace.org/.

Dragons (and kids) Love Tacos!

Last week, our staff, with the help of Virginia Natural Gas volunteers, delivered taco kits and books to each of our families. These are photos from one of our families - thank you for sharing these memories with us!

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers from Virginia Natural Gas for all their help this past Tuesday! Not only did VNG provide funding for this project but they came early in the morning to pack the taco kits and help CHIP staff load their cars. Each taco kit contained a book, either Dragon's First Taco or Dragones y Tacos. Close to 190 kits have already gone out to our families!

A community thrives when all voices are recognized and uplifted. Serving as South Norfolk’s community hub, the Sankofa Family Center provides a safe space for individuals to access resources and support while promoting community engagement, connecting with their heritage, and fostering a sense of belonging. “Sankofa” is a Ghanaian word that loosely translates to “go back and get it,” the meaning being, to remember one’s past while working towards a better future.

Parents thrive when they have a caring community to lean on. Parent Cafés offer parents and caregivers a supportive space to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. Guided by the five protective factors: resilience, social connections, emotional development, parenting skills, and concrete support in times of need, Parent Cafés empower participants to reflect, grow, and build stronger families together. With funding from the United Way of South Hampton Roads, CHIP has created a network of like-minded partners to bring Parent Cafes to communities across the region.
