🎃 Costume Donation Request! 👻

St. Louis Center is looking for adult-sized Halloween costumes to help bring our Trunk or Treat Haunted House to life!

We're especially interested in costumes that could be used by volunteers portraying fairy tale, fantasy, Halloween, and family-friendly spooky characters. Donations of gently used costumes are greatly appreciated and will help create a memorable experience for our residents and community guests.

Costumes may be dropped off at St. Louis Center Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-3:00 PM, any time before October 21st.

Rep. Schmaltz, governor highlight new protections for foster children

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz this week joined Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as they recognized a new law spearheaded by Schmaltz that is now helping foster children build stronger, more stable futures. Schmaltz’s bipartisan plan was signed into law on July 29 as Public Act 51 of 2026 and officially took effect Oct. 1.

The new law ends a practice in which federal benefits awarded to foster children could be used to reimburse the state for the cost of care. Instead, a significant portion of those benefits must now be preserved to help young people as they transition into adulthood.

“Too many foster youth enter adulthood without the support systems and financial resources many other young people can rely on,” Schmaltz said. “This law helps ensure benefits intended for foster children remain available to help them pursue an education, secure housing, start a career, and build a stable future. I’m grateful to everyone who helped bring attention to this issue and worked together to get this reform across the finish line.”

In addition to preserving benefits for foster youth ages 14 and older, the law makes sure kids receive financial literacy education and ensures young people are informed about federal benefits collected on their behalf. Schmaltz said the reform will provide foster youth a stronger foundation for success as they age out of the foster care system.

We have a winner of the 2027 Alaskan Cruise Raffle. Tommy D. of Brooklyn is this year's winner. He and his wife plan to save the money for a trip in the future. He bought his ticket at the St. Joseph Shrine Reverse Raffle sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council #6223.

The residents started a new program to help highlight positive attributes about the residents that live here and promote a greater sense of community. The residents nominated their peers for SLC Star of the Month, and the committee of Aktion Club board members determined that Ken and Jerome are the Stars for this month..

While they were at the recent Aktion Club State Convention, St. Louis Center members showcased their creativity in the convention’s Poster Contest, creating artwork to promote causes that were important to them. Lisa created a patriotic “God Bless America” poster, while Cathy’s “Kindness Wins!” design promoted the power of kindness. Jacqui drew inspiration from Barn Sanctuary, Sarah encouraged others to “Protect Our Planet,” and Emely promoted environmental responsibility with “Be Green and Recycle!”
