A Treatable Illness
"Addiction is a disease that involves more than the use of drugs."

At our first meeting, we may have been taken aback at the way members shared about how the disease of addiction had affected their lives. We thought to ourselves, "Disease? I've just got a drug problem! What in the world are they talking about?"
After some time in the program, we began to see that our addiction ran deeper than our obsessive, compulsive drug use. We saw that we suffered from a chronic illness that affected many areas of our lives. We didn't know where we'd "caught" this disease, but in examining ourselves we realized that it had been present in us for many years.
Just as the disease of addiction affects every area of our lives, so does the NA program. We attend our first meeting with all the symptoms present: the spiritual void, the emotional agony, the powerlessness, the unmanageability.
Treating our illness involves much more than mere abstinence. We use the Twelve Steps, and though they don't "cure" our illness, they do begin to heal us. And as we recover, we experience the gift of life.
Just for Today: I will treat my illness with the Twelve Steps.

Una enfermedad tratable
«La adicción es una enfermedad que implica algo más que el consumo de dr**as».

En nuestra primera reunión, tal vez nos quedamos desconcertados por la forma en que los miembros compartían cómo la enfermedad de la adicción había afectado sus vidas. Pensamos para nuestros adentros: «¿Enfermedad? ¡Yo solo tengo un problema con las dr**as! ¿De qué demonios están hablando?».
Después de algún tiempo en el programa, empezamos a ver que nuestra adicción calaba más hondo que nuestro consumo obsesivo y compulsivo de dr**as. Vimos que padecíamos una enfermedad crónica que afectaba muchas áreas de nuestras vidas. No sabíamos dónde habíamos «contraído» esta enfermedad, pero al examinarnos a nosotros mismos nos dimos cuenta de que había estado presente en nosotros durante muchos años.
Así como la enfermedad de la adicción afecta cada área de nuestras vidas, también lo hace el programa de NA. Asistimos a nuestra primera reunión con todos los síntomas presentes: el vacío espiritual, la agonía emocional, la impotencia, la ingobernabilidad.
Tratar nuestra enfermedad implica mucho más que la mera abstinencia. Utilizamos los Doce Pasos y, aunque estos no «curan» nuestra enfermedad, sí comienzan a sanarnos. Y a medida que nos recuperamos, experimentamos el regalo de la vida.
Solo por hoy: Trataré mi enfermedad con los Doce Pasos.
