In the midst of celebrating film on the world’s biggest stages, we’re honoring the storytellers who moved us right here at BLAC Fest.

These films challenged, inspired, and reflected the depth and range of Black storytelling, leaving an imprint far beyond the screen.

Today, we honor the official award recipients of this year’s BLAC Film Festival:

🏆 Ex Nihilo Award (Most Creative)
Heated — Directed by Shianne Salazar

🏆 Introspectus Award (Most Reflective)
Sunhearts — Directed by Promise Robinson

🏆 Ficus Natal Award (Cultural Depth)
What’s in a Name — Directed by Lotanna Ogbuefi

🏆 Grand Jury Award
Charlie’s Will — Directed by Dominique Jones

Each of these films brought depth, originality, and intention to the screen. We honor your artistry and thank you for contributing to a night that celebrated independent Black filmmaking at its finest. 👏🏾✨

This year at BLAC Fest, Framework unfolds across three distinct iterations, each event exploring how Black creativity is shaped, translated, and reimagined.

🗣️ ArtCHATT: Framework examines the structures that that influence Black identity through art and dialogue.

💃🏾 Beyond The Frame expands into performance and movement, translating visual art into embodied expression.

🎬 Frame by Frame moves into film and storytelling framing Black experiences through cinematic perspective and authorship.

Across every experience, we’re asking:
Who builds the frame? Who exists within it? And what happens when we reconstruct it on our own terms?

Welcome to Framework.

Our May SOBI Social closed out a beautiful 3-month run at The Chattery 🌿

Big love to everyone who’s shown up, shared space, and created with us. Special thanks to our May artists—poet Erika Roberts and visual artist Shio—who led us through this powerful prompt:

“What does it mean to exploit the soil and still expect it to bloom?”

🌱 What’s been planted in me?
🌱 What’s been taken without permission?

Swipe to see the art that bloomed from that.

Thank you for being our creative home these past few months 💛
We’re taking a break in June, but stay tuned—new dates are coming soon.

This FREE experience includes a vendor market (swipe to check some of them out) as well as an Art Lounge guided by the beautiful poet, and visual artists .ink ✨

I also heard from a little birdie that Erika would be gifting us with a performance of words between 3:30-4 pm 👀
