TreesCharlotte is a public/private nonprofit who partners with the community to plant and care for trees, growing a healthier canopy for everyone.

TreesCharlotte was created as a public/private collaborative dedicated to planting and giving away 5,000 annually, primarily through volunteer efforts. The collaborative also educates Charlotte’s residents on the importance of the canopy and ways to plant and preserve trees. Among the myriad benefits, trees clean our air, ease storm water run-off, reduce our energy usage, cool our streets, parks, and homes, and provide natural beauty that is the envy of cities across the world.

Not all greenery is good greenery...

Rainy days are busy days for trees.

Did you know that trees are one of Charlotte's best natural stormwater systems?

🌳 Their leaves slow rainfall before it hits the ground.
🌳 Their roots help water soak into the soil instead of rushing into storm drains.
🌳 They reduce runoff that can contribute to flooding, erosion, and polluted waterways.

As the rain falls over the next few days, take a moment to appreciate the trees around you, they're working hard even when we don't notice! Every tree planted today helps make Charlotte more resilient tomorrow. 💚

If you live in the neighborhoods of Greenville or Historic Hoskins, now's the time to apply for free tree programs through Treesilience, TreesCharlotte's initiative to expand and protect tree canopy in underserved and under-canopied neighborhoods.

Black Walnut Tree: Friend or Foe? 🌳

We're back with Part 2 of our June Tree of the Month series featuring the Black Walnut! As a quick recap, Black Walnuts produce a natural chemical compound called “juglone.” Juglone has been linked to a phenomenon known as allelopathy, where one plant may influence the growth and survival of neighboring plants.

So, does that mean Black Walnuts don't play nicely with others? 🤔 Well… the answer isn't entirely clear. While some studies and gardeners report that certain plants struggle when growing near Black Walnuts, the science is still somewhat limited, and experiences can vary widely depending on the plants, soil conditions, and environment.

Huge thank you to our TreeMAK team for helping us (quite literally) wipe the dust off of our tools and get us ready for the next planting season! Planting trees in all types of weather conditions along with pruning hundreds of young trees means that our tools need a little TLC each summer. But thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we're ready to hit the ground running next planting season.

Meet our June Tree of the Month: the Black Walnut! 🌳

This native tree loves sunshine and is often found growing near streams, rivers, and other water sources. While you may be familiar with the English walnuts commonly sold in grocery stores, did you know our native Black Walnut also produces edible nuts? Just be prepared to work for your snack, the thick outer husks and hard shells make Black Walnuts notoriously difficult to crack open. Oh, and wear gloves. Black walnuts will stain your hands black, and you have to wait for the natural dye to wear off - which can take weeks!

Black Walnuts have another fascinating trait: they produce a natural chemical called “juglone,” which can affect the growth of nearby plants. This phenomenon is known as allelopathy, a word derived from Greek that roughly translates to “mutual suffering.” 😲 Curious about how this works and what it means for your garden?
