South Carolina's single largest occupational group has 283,500 workers.

It's Office and Administrative Support — and it sits in the second-most AI-exposed category in the country.

90% of those tasks are theoretically within AI's reach. 34% are already being touched.

That gap is the smallest it will ever be. — SCAIO Journal [link in comments]

This chart from Anthropic's new labor market report is the most important thing you'll see about AI and jobs this year.

The large blue shape: everything AI could theoretically do across the economy right now.

The small red shape: what AI is actually doing in professional settings today.

The gap between them is closing. And when it does, South Carolina's workforce feels it first in a specific place — not on the manufacturing floor, but in the 283,500 Office and Administrative Support roles that are the state's single largest occupational group.

We broke it down for South Carolina specifically in SCAIO's first Journal article. Full link in the comments.

We're live.

The South Carolina Artificial Intelligence Observatory is now open to the public — a free, independent resource for anyone trying to understand what artificial intelligence is doing to South Carolina.

Right now you can:

→ Track state AI legislation and policy in real time
→ Explore an interactive map of SC's AI ecosystem — universities, research programs, state initiatives, and organizations
→ Access the key strategy documents, committee pages, and reports shaping how South Carolina approaches AI

We're also building:

→ South Carolina's first flagship AI landscape report
→ Original analysis and commentary through the SCAIO Journal
→ An expanded, searchable ecosystem directory

SCAIO exists because effective AI policy can't be written in a vacuum, and secure AI systems can't be built without understanding their impact on the community. South Carolina's AI landscape is moving fast. We're here to make sure citizens, policymakers, business leaders, and educators can keep up.

Follow this page for ongoing policy updates, ecosystem news, and analysis — all focused on the Palmetto State.
