Nobody's Perfekt Dogs and Cats

Just a funny update on a dog that has been with us for 7 years. He came from the Oakland Shelter with A LOT of behavioral issues, including a number of bites. We evaluated him a foster home, and determined that, yes, he is what we call a "baby shark." He has been in one of our sanctuary foster homes where he was intended to live out his life. Then his foster home had a major medical issue and we had to rehome some of our dogs, including Toto. We temporarily moved him into our adoption center to see what would happen. At 11 years old now, he is a very different dog than when he first came to us. He has mellowed out A LOT. He still has no interest in interacting with people (or other dogs for that matter). He'll take a treat, but that is about it. He doesn't have many teeth left (except for the canines . . . sigh, it's always the canines). He tolerates a little bit of petting from his primary caretaker, but if he is pushed too far, he will snap (but not actually bite). Trying to pick him up is a whole different ballgame (we don't try). In his foster home, he sort of kept to himself in the safety of his x-pen and crate. At the adoption center, he is much more active. We shot this video last night.

We never did any DNA testing, but we're sure he is probably part baby goat. We think he is practicing his freestyle floor routine for the next Westminster Dog Show.

The special needs kitten that we rescued from the Sacramento County Shelter, had to have come from a breeder who dumped a kitten they couldn't sell. Wobbles is a "Snowshoe Cat,' another hybrid species. Wobbles has been diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia, affecting his motor skills. We ruled out some of the more devastating causes, so with any luck he will have a pretty normal life, but a little wobbly. As he learns to compensate for his condition, he will likely get a little better over time. However, there is always the chance that other neurological symptoms will emerge. With a kitten, it is a wait-and-see situation. Here is more information on Snowshoe cats:

A couple of our most recent rescues were a puppy and a kitten that had to have been dumped by backyard breeders. The puppy's name is Stella. She was dropped off at the Oakland SPCA with 3 of her littermates who all got adopted. Stella wasn't so lucky. She had some health issues, but was still adopted out and returned 4 times (through no fault of her own). The person that surrendered the puppies said they were Cane Corso and German Shepherd mixes.

We decided to do DNA testing on Stella. It was confirmed that she was exactly one half GSD and one half Cane Corso/Neo Mastiff. The lines were incredibly "clean" going back 2-3 generations. You only get that scenario with intentional breeding. Her official breed is a hybrid called a "German Corso." Here is more information on this hybrid:

Stella's current foster family doesn't feel experienced enough with her breed to keep her permanently, so we are looking for a forever home for Ms. Stella.

3 kittens for triple the fun at Nobody's Perfekt Dogs & Cats Adoption Center!!

We now have 3 kittens who are all about 3 months old. They came to us from different places at different times but are now best friends!
Our newest arrival is Dusty, a gorgeous gray tabby.
They are currently in the same foster home but you can visit all of them this weekend at our two adoption events:

Rocko is currently being fostered at one of our local shelters. However, shelter fostering is always temporary and he needs to "move on" either to a rescue group or . . .

The shelter has reached out to us about taking him. We don't have any available foster homes, especially that can work with an under socialized, skittish dog. He came from a hoarding situation. All of the dogs' physical conditions were pretty good, but many of them were not socialized with humans (or humans other than their original caretaker). Often in the past when we have rescued one of these dogs, they usually come around quickly once they are out of the shelter. However in Rocko's case, he has been in a foster home for about a month and is still skittish. If he comes around, it may take a while. Having another friendly, social dog(s) in the home can usually help a lot with lessening the anxiety a skittish dog has. It is unclear if there are other dogs in his current foster home.

If someone would like to foster Rocko, and you have experience in working with insecure dogs, plus you have other outgoing friendly dogs already in your home, please reach out to us about fostering Rocko.

Update: Colbey is in a foster home.

We need a foster home for a puppy we just pulled from the Sacramento County Animal Shelter. Colbey (who is between 2 and 3 months old) is not special needs. So you may be asking, "why did you rescue him if he has no medical issues?" Fair enough question. There were a number of puppies in the shelter with diarrhea issues, and the fear was that there may have been a parvo outbreak (there wasn't - it ended up just being parasites and giardia, typical puppy intestinal stuff). On top of that, for a puppy whose balls have yet to even drop, Colbey has some pretty strong opinions about strangers. Staff had difficulty handling him. Out of the shelter, he has bonded very quickly with the director of the rescue who has been working with him. He is an active, playful, annoying puppy with razor sharp talons and puppy teeth.

He needs a foster home with another young, tolerant playful dog his size that can also set a good example for Colbey in meeting strangers. Colbey is too young to be neutered, so he is still intact for now. No kids in the home.

After over 2.5 years in our rescue, Cheyanne has finally found her forever home. She came to us as a 2 month old puppy that was hit by a car, resulting in two fractured legs. With splinting, the legs eventually healed on their own, leaving one hind leg slightly shorter than the good hind leg, but not impeding her ability to move normally.
