The more tools we have to prevent DV is always a win. However it is disappointing to once again see as laws are passed and tools are used that we are not addressing the perpetrators. We continually put the problem on the victim/survivor.

What are your thoughts? What ways could we address and assess the perpetrators of DV?

Several states have passed laws to have a statewide registery for DV perpetrators. We would love to see Colorado follow!

So often when we lose someone it’s hard to let go of the physical things that were our loved ones. For those of you that knew Tricia you know she loved her clothes, purses and shoes. 4 years ago I was determined to only let her things go when I knew it would be going to survivors of domestic violence. I’m happy to say that Tessa has opened a safe house here in Douglas County where Tricia lived and I was finally able to donate over 15 boxes of her clothing, shoes and purses knowing it will help other woman who were brave enough to want a life free of abuse. The physical things are just a small part of Tricia’s Legacy that she leaves behind. Knowing this part of her lives on in the lives of other women who are free brings a little peace to my heart. Love & Miss You Tricia.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS NOT ALWAYS PHYSICAL ABUSE.

For many, like Tricia it was Coercive Control.

What is coercive control?

making it hard for you to see your friends and family
always needing to know where you are and what you are doing
telling you what you can and can’t wear, or where you can and can’t go
not letting you have control over your own money, or where you work
checking your phone, your computer and your social media
not letting you practice your faith or spirituality in ways that you want to
any actions or behaviours that make you feel like you’re being watched, or like you can’t act like yourself because you’ll be punished
any actions or behaviours that make you feel forced into doing something you don’t want to do, including things sexual or private.

Did you know only 12 states recognize Corecive Control as Domestic Violence?!
We need to change laws to recognize any abuse whether physical or not is Abuse!

The Colorado Department of Human Services said a new program for survivors of domestic and sexual violence is already helping hundreds of survivors and their children.
