October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. People who are blind or have low vision bring skills, experience, and ideas to the workplace. Employers can support access with usable application forms, accessible documents, and conversations about the tools each employee needs. Start with the person’s qualifications and goals. Share this post to help keep workplace accessibility in the conversation all year.

Graphic featuring the large headline "Recognize talent. Support access." with "National Disability Employment Awareness Month" written directly underneath in clear typography. Below the text, a clean vector illustration shows a diverse, inclusive workplace. From left to right: a man using a wheelchair works at a height-adjustable desk; a woman stands beside her guide dog while speaking; a visually impaired woman in a suit walks confidently using a white cane; and a woman using a wheelchair works at a small table. Colorful abstract shapes frame the corners on a clean off-white background.

Today, October 15, is International White Cane Day. A white cane helps its user gather information about the path ahead and travel with greater independence. Show respect by giving people room to move. If you think someone needs help, ask first and follow their lead. Never grab a person or their cane. Join MLV / Orbit Training Center in celebrating independence and the right to move through our communities with confidence.

Orientation and mobility, often called O&M, focuses on knowing where you are and moving through your surroundings. Learning routes, recognizing landmarks, and using a mobility tool can support a person’s travel goals. Training is shaped around the individual. This week, notice the spaces you share: keeping walkways clear is one practical way to make travel more accessible.

A screen reader can turn on-screen text into speech or braille. Magnification can make text and images easier to see. These tools help people access information in ways that work for them. Orbit Training Center for the Blind offers assistive technology skills training to help people build confidence with technology. Curious about getting started? Explore the programs at orbitcenter.net.

The graphic shows a visually impaired woman with glasses and headphones at a desk with a white cane, simultaneously using a smartphone and a laptop. On the left, labels highlight mobile features like VoiceOver (iOS), gesture navigation, and spoken text. On the right, labels point to the laptop highlighting desktop features like JAWS/NVDA desktop readers, screen magnification, and voice control dictation. The bottom features a white banner with social sharing icons and the text, "Accessible Tech for all. Support inclusive design.

Image Description: A woman in a warm yellow sweater stands in a bright, modern kitchen, reaching toward a row of clear glass pantry jars lined up on a wooden countertop. The jars feature clean white labels with bold black text reading "QUINOA," "OATS," and "LENTILS." The woman is gently tracing a set of raised tactile Braille dots located directly underneath the printed text on the "LENTILS" jar. In the background, other organized jars filled with rice and pasta sit neatly on the shelves.

Blindness does not always mean seeing nothing. Some people can detect light, shapes, or movement; others cannot. A person may use a white cane and still read enlarged text or notice something nearby. Avoid making assumptions based on one moment. Listening to someone’s own experience is a better place to start. Save this reminder or share it with someone who wants to learn.

A minimalist graphic with a solid pastel green background. At the center, bold dark green text reads: “BLINDNESS IS A SPECTRUM. Every person’s experience is different.” Surrounding the text are clean, dark green line-art illustrations depicting different facets of visual impairment: a white cane, a hand reading a sheet of braille, an stylized eye, a guide dog wearing a harness, and a hand using an assistive digital device.
