Eduardo Lapetina is exhibiting 24 of his paintings at the Hillsborough Arts Council C3 Satellite Gallery now through July 26. The show is called “Cascading Joy.” You can meet him and talk with him about his work at the Artist Reception, this Friday, May 29. (This is part of the last Friday events in Hillsborough.)

Born to an Italian family living in Buenos Aires, Eduardo pursued a career in medicine and became internationally recognized in molecular cardiovascular research. His world travels allowed him to visit museums across the globe and he became a collector of contemporary art. When disabilities necessitated an early retirement from his medical career, he channeled his creative energies into becoming a visual artist, mainly creating abstract paintings in acrylics. He has maintained a studio in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for three decades.

OCAG artist Ryann Carey has work in the Featured Artist show “Muse” at the Hillsborough Gallery of Art. Ryann works in watercolor and mixed media, and teaches classes at the Eno Arts Mill in Hillsborough. The exhibition also features work by Pete Rodrigues (woodworkeer) and Arianna Bara (jeweler) and is open now through June 21.

The opening reception is Friday, May 29 from 6-9 p.m. Steve Fishman & The Pied Vipers will play blues and original music on the front patio. An artist talk is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at 4pm.

From the HGA website:
Initially Ryann felt the title “Muse” would cause her to focus her work in a single direction. “I admire artists who dedicate themselves in this way,” said Carey “because it offers the opportunity to develop not only technical skill but also an intimacy with an idea or subject. Yet whether from a lack of discipline or scattered mind, the moment I try to settle on a singular muse, I feel an immediate sense of confinement. It is as if choosing one thing requires me to turn away from everything else. That feeling of being boxed in makes me resist the very structure I desired to attain.” Still, what she creates is a cohesive body of work in a less obvious way, showing what strikes her in the visual environment surrounding her. Says Carey, “My work is an attempt to honor and share these pauses. That moment of awareness when the world feels briefly heightened and clear.”

Several OCAG members are featured in a new exhibition at FRANK Gallery in Carrboro. It’s on view now through June 27 and features member artists Peg Bachenheimer, Elijah Kell and Carol Retsch-Bogart, as well as guest artists Sasha Bakaric and Clarke Munford. The opening reception is tomorrow, Friday, May 22, from 6–9 p.m.

From FRANK:
“Elijah Kell creates luminous glass sculptures that capture light, color, and movement while balancing fragility with strength. Crafted piece by piece and layer by layer, his work transforms flat sheets of glass into fluid sculptural forms inspired by gemstones, florals, and the natural elements. Through vivid color, rich texture, and carefully shaped form, Elijah’s work explores the relationship between imagination, process, and presence.

“Carol Retsch-Bogart creates richly layered works that combine collage, textiles, printmaking, and found materials into intuitive compositions full of texture and narrative. Her striking vertical panels, inspired by the idea of a totem, unfold story and symbolism layer by layer, while her sculptural works continue that same spirit of curiosity and exploration across materials and form.

“Peg Bachenheimer’s newest series began intuitively, but gradually evolved into beautiful luminous landscapes, paintings that create space for light, distance, and reflection during chaotic times. Inspired by nature and guided by instinct, Peg’s work offers moments of calm and quiet expansiveness.”

Looking to introduce a kid in your life to the wonders of clay?

OCAG artist Carmen Elliott is offering her Sizzling Summer Clay Classes for kids, ages 7-14, this summer! She’s taught children and teens for more than 40 years. Each week, kids will make different projects, and will finish their pieces with colored slips, stencils and glazes.

“Using stamps, sgraffito, and texture tools, we will hand-build with clay to make gargoyles and guardians for the garden, lemonade pitchers, a serving platter, and a relief portrait of a favorite character or person,” says Carmen.

There are three sessions, all held at Carmen’s studio, #3 Wyrick Street, Chapel Hill.
Kids can attend any or all of the three sessions. The cost for each session is $100 + $25 for supplies.
Mon-Thurs, June 15-18, from 9:30-11:45 a.m.
Mon-Thurs, June 22-25, from 9:30-11:45 a.m.
