Indigenous homelessness is a profound crisis defined not just by the lack of physical shelter, but by a deep spiritual, cultural, and physical disconnection from ancestral lands, communities, and identity caused by colonization.

· American Indian, Alaska Native, and Indigenous individuals experience homelessness at rates significantly higher than their share of the general population.
· Federal data shows that Indigenous populations experienced some of the steepest recent increases in homelessness nationwide
· Literal street homelessness often gets masked in Native communities by "doubling up"—where extended families crowd into single homes on or near tribal lands due to a severe lack of affordable housing
· Native Americans are frequently undercounted by traditional census methods and homeless point-in-time counts, which leads to chronic funding gaps

Causes:
· Intergenerational/Inherited Trauma: Historical policies—such as forced displacement, residential schools, and urban relocation programs—drove long-standing economic and social marginalization
· Systemic Barriers: Chronic underfunding for tribal housing, historic exclusion of tribes from state and federal housing developer status, and a deep, justified mistrust of government agencies hinder resource access
· Cultural Disconnection: Loss of spiritual connection and traditional support networks leaves unhoused Indigenous individuals caught between tribal traditions and urban realities.

Homelessness issues in the fall primarily revolve around the sudden drop in temperatures and the transition into winter operations, which escalate the physical risks of unsheltered living. With local economies tightening and chronic homelessness remaining a persistent concern, advocates emphasize the need for safe, stable housing.

Extreme Weather Vulnerability: Dropping temperatures increase the risk of hypothermia for unsheltered individuals. The shift forces a scramble for seasonal or emergency shelter beds.

System Capacity: As demand rises for emergency housing, local Continuum of Care (CoC) programs often face bed shortages and funding constraints.
Health and Safety: Cold, wet conditions worsen chronic illnesses and physical mobility risks, making unhoused individuals highly vulnerable to injuries.
