Did you know Halloween has Catholic roots? The word “Halloween” comes from “All Hallows' Eve,” the evening before All Saints' Day on November 1. The word hallow means holy or saint.
For centuries, Catholics have celebrated All Saints' Day to honor the saints in heaven, followed by All Souls' Day on November 2, when we pray for the faithful departed. Together, these observances remind us of our connection to the saints and our hope in eternal life.
So amid the costumes, candy and jack-o'-lanterns, remember that Halloween's name has a connection to our Catholic faith!
