It was a pleasure having Spout Springs Emergency Services Chief Alan Jarvis (AJ) and some of his employees join the Ruritans and share a meal at the June 2nd regular meeting. Club President Mike Lancaster offered Chief Jarvis and Deputy Chief Frankie Hobson Ruritan coffee mugs which they earned by answering questions and updating the membership about what is happening in the fire department and the community in regards to emergency services.

Jarvis said that the department is fully staffed, with 23 full-time employees and 17 volunteers. Their ISO (Public Protection Classification) rating, on which local insurance premiums are based, is at Class 3. He remarked that while the new fire truck being built will cost upwards of $800,000, the first one cost about $325,000, a significant difference. The population of the fire district will now support needing a third fire station, which is being considered and property is being searched for.

The Emergency Services Department is overseen by active, involved board members, who are elected at the annual meeting always held in December. Applicants welcome.

Yesterday, the Johnsonville Ruritan Club and community members observed Memorial Day in remembrance of those who fought and died for our freedom. The Memorial Day Ceremony also honored those who have served our country and are now gone but not forgotten, along with the Gold Star Families who never forget.

The event was held in the Johnsonville Community Center pavilion. Although the heavy rain on the roof was pretty loud, it was a beautiful setting. Colonel Ken Craib, Air Force (Retired) provided the remarks, emphasizing how important small ceremonies and remembrances across America, such as tending graves of the fallen, are to the well-being of our nation. Craib, a retired A-10 fighter pilot who completed over 130 combat missions as an Air Liaison Officer with Special Operations Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, shared his long family history of U.S. military service since the Civil War.

We wish to thank Col. Craib for his service and his inspiring remarks. After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed hot dogs and fellowship inside the building. For more information, see photo captions.
