Johnsonville Community Remembers 9/11

The 25th anniversary of 9/11/2001 was observed in Johnsonville on Friday morning, hosted by the Johnsonville Ruritan Club. The Harnett County Emergency Services Honor Guard posted and retired the colors and conducted a solemn bell salute to commemorate the lives lost in the terrorist attacks. Since 9/11, the bell salute has become a way to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who answered the call that day.

Guest speaker was Command Sergeant Major Brian Edwards, US Army (Retired), whose words reminded guests of the tragic events, the loss and suffering of so many, how we felt that day, and of the unity of the nation pledging to not just heal from that tragedy, but to never let it happen again.

Master of Ceremonies was Ruritan President Mike Lancaster; Ruritan member Larry Taylor said "The Patriot Day Prayer"; Vice-President Lori Owen led the Pledge of Allegiance; and "The Fireman’s Prayer" was given by Jason Cromwell, Harnett County Emergency Services. Bagpiper Sergeant First Class Robert L. White, US Army Special Forces (Retired), played "Amazing Grace," the perfect, piercing notes ringing out in the clear morning air.

The beautiful ceremony, held in the Johnsonville Community Center pavilion, ended with "Taps" played by White on his bugle, followed by the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner." Patriot Day was celebrated all over America that day, and in our little rural area, neighbors joined neighbors in confirmation that we will never forget.
