Jay Craven’s Martin Eden to Screen at Maple Corner Community Center, Thursday, July 23. Jay Craven’s award-winning narrative feature film, “Jack London’s Martin Eden,” will screen at the Maple Corner Community Center, 7pm, Friday, July 24th . The event is co-sponsored by the Community Center and Kingdom County Productions. Craven will introduce the film and lead a post-screening Q & A.

“Jack London’s Martin Eden” received its world premiere at the Nantucket Film Festival and has won Best Film and Best Director awards at the Boston Film Festival and Best Narrative Feature at the Arlington International Film Festival. In her Provincetown Magazine review, film critic Lee Roscoe calls the film, “a gem” that “should be counted amongst the classics of American cinema.”

“Jack London’s Martin Eden” is based on the celebrated writer’s autobiographical novel. Set in 1909, it tells the story of a poor and unschooled sailor who unexpectedly meets Ruth Morse, a magnetic young woman of means and education. Their unconventional attraction upends both lives and propels timely themes of impossible love, dogged individualism in pursuit of the American Dream, and the quest for a comfortable place in an inconstant world. The film includes
two dozen photos taken by Jack London that reveal distinctive views of his world and vision.

Jack London was America’s most popular writer at the turn of the 20th century, having written stories including “Call of the Wild” and “White Fang.” “Martin Eden’s” cast includes Andrew Richardson in the title role and Hayley Griffith and Annet Mahendru as Ruth Morse and Lizzie Connolly, respectively. Richardson’s credits include eight film and television productions along with theatrical stagings of “Taming of the Shrew” and “Othello.” His recent performance at Guy Masterson in the acclaimed London revival of “Guys and Dolls” attracted rave reviews and
landed him a leading role in Season Three of the “Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” series.

Annet Mahendru is best known for her co-starring role as Nina Krilova, the U.S. Russian embassy operative who has a love affair with FBI agent, Stan Beeman, in the long-running Emmy-winning series, “The Americans.” Hayley Griffth’s credits include “Law and Order” and “Bull.” Other supporting actors Missy Yager (“Mad Men,” “Manchester by the Sea”), Grainger Hines (”Lincoln,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”), Phil McGlaston (Broadway’s “Little Foxes,” August Wilson’s “Fences”), Michael Benz (“Downton Abbey,” “Joker”), Jo Armeniox (“Boardwalk Empire”), Ken Wulf Clark (“House of Cards”) and Rebecca Faulkenberry (co-star of “Spiderman” on Broadway).

Jay Craven’s previous films include “Where the Rivers Flow North,” “A Stranger in the Kingdom,” “Disappearances,” and “Northern Borders,” based on the novels of Howard Frank Mosher. His work has screened at Sundance, Lincoln Center, and many others.

Friday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. - “The Testament of Dr Mabuse”

“The Testament of Dr Mabuse,” Fritz Lang’s prescient crime thriller will close out the winter/spring film series at the Maple Corner Community Center on Friday, April 17, at 6:30. Dr Mabuse, a criminal mastermind, is confined to a mental asylum, but somehow his plans get carried out in the world; Detective Lohmann is determined to find out how this happens. Lang intended the 1933 film as a comment on the rise of Hi**er, and the film was banned upon its release in Berlin. It was not until the 1970s that a fresh, uncut print of the film was available.

Rick Winston will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterwards.

Admission is $5-10 at the door.

Please be prepared to take off your shoes and boots at the bottoms of the stairs. Bring "house shoes or slippers" to wear upstairs to help keep the floors clean for other events at the MCCC. Thank you!
