August 17 will be the first day of "Old Home week" in Plainfield. The men's brotherhood is making elaborate plans for the biggest time that Plainfield has had for many years. Letters will be sent to the folks who have moved away from this town, urging their attendance at this celebration. The entire week's program will be published in the papers within a short time and nobody will want to miss the good times promised. It is not too early for you to write a letter to friends urging them to select the week of August 7 as the right time to visit Plainfield.

Plainfield Craft Fair To Feature Exhibits of Many State Products
(Special to The Herald.)

PLAINFIELD, Aug. 2.β€”Human interest will enter into the exhibits on display at the craft fair to be held at Plainfield August 13, 14 and 15 under the direction of the Arts and Crafts service of Vermont, and in connection with the annual Folk Festival at Goddard college.

Several Vermont craftsmen will show and explain the processes in-volved in the making of their special products.

An amazing fiber will be spun on her flax wheel by a Vermont woman, from casein, a by-product of milk. The casein wool will be mixed with wool from angora rabbits, clipped scientifically, and in the presence of the spectators.

There are increasing numbers of angora herds in Vermont, for in addition to many other uses, angora wool has been found to be especially valuable in the manufacture of parachutes and flyers' vests.

Another Vermont woman will spin wool yarn from fleeces taken from her own sheep and explain how she produces articles which find a ready market among skiers and Vermont folk.

Meat boards, cheese boards and bread boards of Vermont cherry will be fashioned on the spot in pear, apple and cherry shaped de- signs.

Other demonstrations will show the making of silver jewelry, metal work, using scraps of materials, wood turning and cabinet work.

Quilting, rug hooking, weaving, rush seating, and decoration of tin- ware will be seen actually in process. Many Vermont craftsmen are contributing their proucts [sic] for exhibition.

THIS well known Summer Resort is now open to the public, and everything in readiness for the reception of guests. The hotel has recently been repainted and refurnished, and the Proprietor has made arrangements with the Montpelier and Wells River railroad to convey guests from Montpelier to his house and return for $1.50. A good bowling alley is connected with the house. Good and sufficient teams will always be in attendance to convey guests from the depot to the hotel. Tickets good for the entire season, and those who patronize this house will find that no pains will be spared to make the visit an enjoyable one. J. MERRILL, Proprietor. Plainfield Defense Preparations in WWII

PLAINFIELD

At a meeting of the defense council held Monday evening, June 15. Judge O. L. Martin was appointed chairman of evacuation and Mrs. Pearl Thomas, chairman of canteen work. Appreciation was expressed to Robert Harvey for the use of the Plainfield Inn for home nursing classes and to President Pitkin for permitting the first aid classes to be held at Goddard college. Eleven persons are taking an advanced first aid course given by Dr. Martin Hirsch. Plans were made for obtaining materials and equipment for making first aid kits for defense workers. Reports of the work being done to bring the control center up to necessary qualifications were encouraging.

How our town made education funding decisions in 1915

PETITION.
To Charles Davis, W. H. Martin, Bert Batchelder, J. Bailaw and E. C. Moore, selectmen of the town of Plainfield, in the county of Washington and state of Vermont: We, the undersigned voters, in town meeting in said town of Plainfield, hereby petition your honorable board to call a special town meeting of the voters of said town of Plainfield to act on the following business, to wit:
To see if the town will vote to pay Bertha I. Wood for her services in teaching the grammar school in said town of Plainfield for the term commencing Nov. 29, 1914, and for teaching the pupils of said grammar school from Jan. 14, 1915, to June 11, 1915, in her private school, provided said Bertha I. Wood shall release and forego all claims for tuition for teaching said grammar school pupils in her said private school from Jan. 16, 1915, to June 11, 1915, that she may have against said pupils or their parents and guardians or other individuals for such teaching during said last mentioned time.
To see if the town will vote to pay O. B. Wood for teaching the high school in said town of Plainfield from Nov. 29, 1914, to Jan. 16, 1915, and for his services in teaching the pupils of the said high school in his private school from Jan. 16, 1915, to June 11, 1915, completing said high school pupils' school year, provided said O. B. Wood shall release and forego all claims for tuition for teaching said high school pupils in his said private school from Jan. 16, 1915, to June 11, 1915, that he may have against said pupils or their parents and guardians for such teaching during said last mentioned time.
To see if the town will vote to establish a junior high school in accordance with the provisions of act No. 69 of the laws of Vermont approved April 1, 1915, which said act is to take effect July 1, 1915.

A petition having been made to us for that purpose, the legal voters of the town of Plainfield are hereby notified and warned to meet at the town hall Tuesday, June 29, 1915, at 10 o'clock a. m. to act on the following business, viz.:
Article 1. To see if the town will vote to pay Bertha I. Wood for her services in teaching the grammar school in said town of Plainfield for the term commencing Nov. 29, 1914, and for teaching the pupils of said grammar school from Jan. 14, 1915, to June 11, 1915, in her private school.
Art. 2. To see if the town will vote to pay O. B. Wood for teaching the high school in said town of Plainfield from Nov. 29, 1914, to Jan. 16, 1915, and for teaching the pupils of the said high school in his private school from Jan. 16, 1915, to June 11, 1915.
Art. 3. To see if the town will vote to establish a junior high school in accordance with the provisions of act No. 69 of the laws of Vermont approved April 1, 1915, which said act is to take effect July 1, 1915.
Art. 4. To do any other business that may legally come before the meeting. Dated at Plainfield this 14th day of June, 1915 A. D.
