Maybe we need to scare up one of these for the coming weather this weekend! Great photo and piece of New England history!

Snow rollers like this one, photographed in Vermont, were once a familiar part of winter travel across northern New England. Before plows and pavement, these heavy rollers were pulled by horses to compress fresh snow, creating firm, smooth roads for sleigh traffic.
More than a century ago, sleighs and pungs were the backbone of winter transportation. Even as early automobiles appeared, many towns simply stored their cars once the snow arrived and returned to horse-drawn travel. Road crews sometimes shoveled snow directly onto covered bridges to form a continuous surface, a practice known as “snowing the bridge.”
As automobiles became dependable year-round and road maintenance shifted toward plowing, snow rollers quietly disappeared from daily use. Today, surviving examples serve as reminders of a time when winter didn’t stop travel—it reshaped how roads were used.
