Do you know what invasive tree this leaf comes from? 🌳

MTRS middle schoolers do, and they put that knowledge to work! FLT staff went back to school for a few days to teach about invasive species ecology and how to identify the plant species (good and bad) that can be found in our forests. We ended the week with a field trip to remove invasive species at the Mohawk Trail Conservation Area.

This is a Norway maple, a common invasive tree that outcompetes other native species and degrades wildlife habitat. Thank you to all the MTRS students who showed up and helped with our stewardship of this special property! 🪏

Good cause, great trails!

The Edge Hill Trail Race, a fundraiser for the Franklin Land Trust, features the beauty of the western Mass hilltowns as runners explore a mix of single-track trails and dirt roads.

Register to run here: https://www.runreg.com/edge-hill-trail-race
Sign up to volunteer here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4AA5AE2BA5FEC07-63869640-copy #/

The Trail Race is a fundraiser for Franklin Land Trust. Not a runner? Volunteer! Whether you're chasing the finish line yourself or cheering others across, there are many ways you can get involved to support our work. We need help at aid stations, registration, route sweeps, and more.

This race is in partnership with Beast Coast Trail Running. The race will start and finish at Edge Hill, a former golf course that FLT is restoring to natural wildlife habitat.

Thank you so much to the students who helped tend to the Raspberry Hill Community Garden last week! From the gardeners: "The student and staff's efforts have infused a much needed boost of community to our beautiful Raspberry Hill." 🫶

If a tree falls in the forest and 25 students are around to hear it, it's a field trip to Hall Tavern Farm! 🌳 🪵

Last week, 5th and 6th graders from Hawlemont Regional Elementary visited the farm to learn about sustainable forest management and see a sawmill demonstration.

Thank you to Jay Healy and Jared Bellows at Hall Tavern Farm for hosting and sharing their work! This field trip was funded by Voices for the Forest grant program, to provide educational experiences around sustainable forestry, climate change education, and career path exploration.

FLT staff and volunteers celebrated Earth Day with a clean-up event at our Crowningshield Conservation Area. In just about one hour, 10 people collected 12 bags of trash and recycling! Plus several tires, metal cables, and old car parts...🚯

We noticed that a lot of this litter was collected at the outlets of culverts under the road after being washed down from upstream areas. Unfortunately, rain and snowmelt can carry this pollution further into our rivers and streams, like the West Branch of the North River which runs through Crowningshield. We are planning another clean-up soon at this special place!

Today is Earth Day, but Franklin Land Trust's work protecting the environment goes on all year long. Stay up to date on all our events, ways to volunteer, and what we're working on by signing up for our eNewsletter! Link in bio 🌎

We have $5,564 left to raise before we meet our $23,000 goal — and we've already come so far together. Thank you to everyone who has given today and since early giving began on March 28th.

Every gift that comes in between now and midnight tonight moves us closer to our goal and closer to protecting the places that make western Massachusetts special, the multi-generational family farms and the quiet, sheltered corners of the deep woods where the rest of the world falls away.

We aren't working toward abstract goals but towards the conservation of real places, with real histories, that can't be recovered once they're gone.

Once land is developed, the forest doesn't come back. Streams that have been redirected or dammed do not return to their old path.

But when we take action and work together as a community, we get to say: this place stays.

This Earth Month, stand with the Franklin Land Trust. Give Back to the Land, and help us protect what makes our corner of New England feel like home.
