Our watermelons have been coming on strong this year! A combination of bird netting to protect against pecking crows and a good layer of compost has increased our yields a LOT compared to last year. And they looked so good, farm staff and volunteers had to have a sample 🍉😋

Our tromboncino squashes are ready! Lindsay was proudly showing off the first one of the season just a couple of weeks ago. These funky guys are not only fun to look at, but they also have higher resistance to vine borer beetles than other squash varieties such as summer squash…which is why we chose to grow them this year. 🤭

The flowers are in bloom and we love seeing Monarch butterflies enjoying their abundance! 🌸🌻🌷

A very keen-eyed volunteer even found a Monarch caterpillar during our Wednesday morning harvest last week! 🐛 Mid-August is peak Monarch butterfly season in Maine. Pretty soon, they’ll begin their long journey back to Mexico, where they’ll over-winter!

Mid-August means we're on constant alert for tomato hornworms! 🐛

These caterpillars may look out of this world, but they love eating our tomato plants and are an absolute nuisance on the farm! They range in size from super tiny to large and chunky, and you have to have a keen eye to spot them because they blend right in with the plants! You can often find them by spotting their bite marks on partially eaten leaves or by looking for the not-so conspicuous trails of p**p that they leave behind...

We're thankful for our awesome volunteers who conduct regular checks of our tomato plants to keep these pesky critters in check! 🙌

A small, but mighty crew of volunteers joined us on the farm this past Saturday for Ella’s hedgerow cleanup project! This group took on quite a daunting task, ripping out bind w**d vines and grass from some VERY dry soil—but they had such amazing energy and made a great start! We can’t thank our wonderful intern, Ella, enough for coordinating and leading the cleanup. 💚 Swipe to see the progress so far and a cute little bee enjoying the native plants in the hedgerow. 🐝

Introducing Samantha, one of our fantastic summer interns! Samantha is a master’s student at the Tufts Friedman School for Nutrition Science and Policy, and she’s specializing in Environmental Economics, Sustainable Food Systems, and Agricultural Science and Policy. For her project, Samantha is creating a comprehensive and accessible index of our crops, accompanied by a catalog of recipes utilizing our farm veggies! 🥕🥦 Samantha brings a hard work ethic and a keen eye for detail to every farm task—thank you for your help, Samantha!🙌🏼

Introducing the sweetest new addition to our farm...the Five Senses Discovery Garden! 🐞🐛🌱

If you've been following us for a while, you've probably seen our periodic updates on this project. We are so excited to announce that the discovery garden is officially complete! This garden was designed by our Farm Director Lindsay in collaboration with Colby Co. Engineering, who generously donated their time, labor, materials, and impeccable design skills to this project! They've gone above and beyond for this project, and we couldn't be more grateful to them.

The discovery garden features an edible herb and mini vegetable garden, a live roots display, a mud kitchen, and many more sweet little details. Since we've finished, the garden has undergone rigorous quality control by a number of tiny farm visitors...and it's safe to say it's a hit! For now, the discovery garden is open to children volunteering at the farm during our usual shifts. In the future, we hope to have scheduled play opportunities that will be open to the public, so stay tuned for that!
