Foster Friday Fact

Louisiana's foster care system doesn't follow a young person into every part of adulthood.

When a young person ages out, they still have to figure out housing, employment, education, transportation, finances, and relationships.

The system may change.

The need for support doesn't.

That's something I want our community to understand.

Aging out of foster care isn't the finish line.

It's the beginning of adulthood.

And the beginning of adulthood is exactly when young people need people in their corner.

At The Family Connection, we're working to build that support through mentorship, life skills, financial education, career guidance, educational support, case management, and housing navigation.

We want to help young people prepare for what's next instead of waiting for a crisis.

If you believe in that mission, help us build it.

What Could Your Organization Bring to the Table?

We're looking for community partners who want to do more than simply say they support foster youth.

We want to build relationships that create real opportunities.

Businesses can provide employment and internships.

Professionals can provide career guidance.

Colleges and schools can help connect young people to educational opportunities.

Housing professionals can help us navigate resources.

Community organizations can provide referrals and support.

And donors can help fund the services that make all of this possible.

There is no single solution to the challenges facing young adults aging out of foster care.

But when we bring our resources together, we can create something much stronger.

If your organization wants to be part of the solution, let's talk.

We're Still Building

When I started The Family Connection, I knew the need was bigger than one person.

I knew there were young people aging out of foster care who needed support.

I knew there were gaps that needed to be filled.

And I knew it would take a community to make it happen.

We're still building.

We're raising funds.
We're building partnerships.
We're recruiting volunteers.
We're creating programs.
We're having conversations with people who want to help.

It may not happen overnight, but every step gets us closer to the day when a young person can come to us and know they have somewhere to turn.

That's what keeps me going.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared our posts, introduced us to someone, volunteered, or simply encouraged us along the way.

We're just getting started.

If you haven't joined us yet, there's still room for you.

We Are Asking You to Help Us Take the Next Step

If you've been following The Family Connection, you've probably seen us talk about what we want to build.

Now I want to talk about what we need.

We need resources to turn this vision into services.

We need funding to create programs.

We need volunteers to give their time.

We need partners to open doors.

And we need people in our community who are willing to believe that investing in foster youth is worth it.

This is a grassroots effort.

We're not waiting for someone else to come along and solve this problem.

We're doing the work.

But we need people to do it with us.

If you've been thinking about donating, this is a great time to take that step.

Even a small gift helps us move forward.

And if you aren't able to give, share our mission with someone who might be.

Help us spread the word.

Help us build the support system these young people deserve.

Foster Friday Fact

In State Fiscal Year 2025, **209 young people in Louisiana exited foster care because they reached the age limit.**

Think about that number for a moment.

209 young people.

209 young adults beginning a new chapter of their lives.

For some, that transition will come with a strong support system.

For others, it may come with uncertainty about where they're going to live, how they're going to support themselves, or who they can call when something goes wrong.

That's why this work matters to me.

I don't want us to wait until a young person is in crisis before we decide they need help.

With the passage of House Bill 211 and the additional challenges facing people experiencing homelessness, preparing young people for stable adulthood is more important than ever.

We have an opportunity to step in earlier.

To teach.
To mentor.
To connect.
To encourage.
To prepare.

That's what we're working to build at The Family Connection.

If you believe Louisiana's foster youth deserve that support, help us get started.

We Need Our Community

I started The Family Connection because I believe this is a problem our community can do something about.

But I also know we can't do it alone.

We need mentors.

We need businesses willing to open doors.

We need professionals willing to share their knowledge.

We need community organizations willing to partner with us.

We need donors willing to invest in this work.

And we need people willing to simply tell someone else about what we're doing.

There is a place for everyone in this mission.

You don't have to be wealthy.
You don't have to own a business.
You don't have to have hours of free time every week.

You just have to care enough to ask, "What can I do?"

We're building The Family Connection from the ground up, and we want our community to be part of that foundation.

Nobody Taught Me Everything I Needed to Know

Think about everything you had to learn when you became an adult.

How to manage your money.

How to find a job.

How to handle your first apartment.

How to build credit.

How to advocate for yourself.

How to make difficult decisions.

Most of us didn't figure all of that out overnight. We had people teaching us along the way.

That's why I don't believe telling a young person, "You're 18 now. You're on your own," is enough.

Young adults need opportunities to learn, make mistakes, ask questions, and have someone there to help them work through those moments.

That's what we're building at The Family Connection.

We're not here to do everything for young people.

We're here to help prepare them to do it for themselves.

If you want to help us provide that opportunity to young people aging out of foster care, please consider making a donation.

What Happens When Someone Believes in You?

Sometimes the difference between giving up and trying one more time is having someone who believes in you.

That's something I think about often when I think about the young people we're working to serve.

A young person aging out of foster care may have already experienced more instability than most of us can imagine. Then they're expected to step into adulthood and figure everything out.

Find a job.
Find housing.
Manage money.
Make decisions.
Plan for the future.

That's a lot for anyone to carry alone.

At The Family Connection, we're building a support system that says, "You don't have to do this by yourself."

We're raising funds now to help us begin providing mentorship, life skills, financial education, career guidance, educational support, housing navigation, and case management.

We're still building, but we're committed to getting there.

If you believe in this mission, help us take the next step.
