I was honored to attend the 3rd Annual "Stories Behind the Menu" event! This incredible gathering brought together 50 University of Minnesota CREACH partners recognized for their dedication to improving community health. The evening celebrated SARX’s impact with a vibrant rooftop reception that perfectly blended culture, food, and community.

We were treated to a multi-course culinary journey showcasing the beautiful Liberian dishes and personal stories of the acclaimed chef, Get U A Vickey. It was an intimate look at her inspiration and culinary style, making for an unforgettable night of storytelling and connection.

SARX, in partnership with V3 Sports and Three Rivers Park District, is helping make the safe exploration of Minnesota’s waterways possible for more Twin Cities families. Through free water safety training, we are equipping children and families with the knowledge and skills they need to enjoy Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes, rivers, and pools safely and confidently.

A trio of nonprofits are working together to offer a free water safety workshops for those unfamiliar with water.

Drowning is a growing public health crisis, especially in Black communities and other communities of color, where longstanding disparities in access to swimming lessons, water safety education, and opportunities to learn these lifesaving skills continue to have devastating consequences.

In just the last two years, I personally know of three Black immigrants who drowned simply because they did not know how to swim. These tragedies were preventable. And they underscore why this issue cannot be ignored.

That is why SARX is proud to partner with Three Rivers Park District and V3 Sports to confront this crisis through education, prevention, and expanded access to swimming instruction.

Our goal is simple; every child and every family should have the knowledge, confidence, and skills to be safer around water.

This partnership is about far more than learning how to swim. It is about Saving lives,
building confidence, reducing disparities, and making swimming a core part of public health.

Together, we can help ensure that a day at the pool, lake, or beach is a day of joy, not tragedy. Water safety is public health. Swimming is essential, especially in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. And prevention starts with access.

SARX Statement Regarding the Cancellation of the Liberia Lone Star vs. Minnesota United FC International Friendly

Strengthening African Resilience towards Excellence (SARX) regrets to announce that the international friendly match between the Liberia Lone Star National Football Team and Minnesota United FC, scheduled for July 26, 2026, at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota, has been canceled.

The decision follows the denial of United States entry visas for several key members of the Liberian national team and official delegation. Despite months of planning and extensive efforts by all parties involved to make this historic event possible, it has become clear that the necessary travel requirements cannot be completed in time for the match to proceed.

“We are deeply disappointed by this outcome. This event represented more than a football match; it was an opportunity to celebrate Liberia’s independence, showcase Liberian talent on a global stage, strengthen ties with the Diaspora, and bring communities together through the power of sports,” says Executive Director Wynfred Russell.

SARX extends its sincere appreciation to Minnesota United FC, Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Liberia Football Association, sponsors, partners, volunteers, and the many individuals who dedicated their time, energy, and resources to making this event possible. “We also thank the thousands of fans who purchased tickets, planned to attend, and supported this vision from the beginning,” Russell concluded.

Although this event will not move forward as planned, SARX remains committed to its mission of strengthening communities through sports, education, and cultural engagement. They remain hopeful that future opportunities will allow Liberia’s national team to compete in Minnesota under more favorable circumstances.
