September is National PACE Month!

We welcome the community to see firsthand how the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) empowers seniors to remain independent, connected, and cared for in their own homes. The theme of this year’s observance is to honor the experiences of participants, caregivers and PACE staff and highlight the meaningful, personalized support that defines the PACE model of care. Yesterday, our team joined ~125 caregivers at the Fond du Lac Caregiver Conference at Community Church! This year's focus was brain health through movement, with workshops on topics such as fall prevention, a caregiving panel, and more. We loved connecting with family and professional caregivers and sharing more about our Family Care program in Fond du Lac County.

This month’s Employee Spotlight is on Jean, an LPN Residential Care Coordinator who has spent 10 years supporting our members at Trinity Woods. Here’s what she shared with us.

▪ When did you first know that you wanted to pursue a career in this field?

After an injury with a long hospital stay during my early 20s, I noticed that some nurses were more patient, kind, and empathetic. I decided I wanted to do that kind of work.

▪ How did you find your way to Community Care?

While working at Marian Catholic, I met the School Sisters of Notre Dame when I became the nurse manager of their living unit. Then I followed them to the Elm Grove convent as a congregation nurse. Ten years ago, I joined the PACE team and continue to care for the Sisters at Trinity Woods.

▪ What advice would you give to someone considering a career in long-term care?

Expose yourself to other opportunities and work at a variety of places earlier in your career to have broad-based knowledge. Choose the team you will be working with wisely - great coworkers and supervisors make all the difference! Put the member first and be attentive to the small details, because they can make a big impact.

▪ Where is your favorite place to visit in Wisconsin?

Door County, because I love being surrounded by water on the peninsula.

▪ What are three words you would use to describe yourself?

Quiet, observer, and animal lover.

▪ What is something you can’t live without?

My dog Lewy. He’s a 6-year-old shih-poo, the best companion, and a true lap dog.

▪ If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Because of historical ties, there are 2 places: Hawaii because my mom was born there and I’ve never been (If her family hadn’t moved to Milwaukee, I could have lived there) and Ireland and Scotland because my grandparents came from there.
