🏛️ 2025–26 Legislative Wrap-up

As the 2025–26 legislative session comes to a close, we want to share a recap of key developments and highlight the work SCWA has undertaken to protect, expand, and strengthen Wisconsin’s parental choice programs.

Throughout the session, SCWA closely monitored or advised lawmakers on 49 proposals, focusing on legislation that would either expand opportunities for families or threaten the programs they rely on.

We remain committed to ensuring Wisconsin families continue to have access to educational options that best meet their children’s needs.

Last week, the Senate and Assembly convened in Special Session on a legislative compromise reached by Governor Tony Evers and GOP legislative leaders. The proposal passed the Assembly on a bipartisan vote but failed in the Senate. All Senate Democrats voted against the proposal as well as three Republican members.

One of the provisions in the proposal would have increased special education aid. As a result, the per pupil payments for students participating in choice, charter, special needs scholarship, and open enrollment programs would have increased, amounting to a $16.3 million increase over the two fiscal years (2025-26 and 2026-27).

📚✨Read Across America Day in Brookfield! Yesterday, . Adam Neylon visited and toured the Lord Lutheran School in Brookfield to celebrate Read Across America Day with a lively 1st grade classroom. He read I Really Like Slop! from the beloved Elephant & Piggie series— and the students especially enjoyed the dramatic “GROAN!” moments from Gerald the Elephant.

After story time, Rep. Neylon toured the school and met with Principal Ben Schramm to discuss Christ the Lord’s recent decision to join Wisconsin’s School Choice Program and how the school is serving families in the community.

It was a great day highlighting the importance of literacy, parental choice, and strong local schools that are helping students grow and succeed.
