What is Our Next Step?

I would not want to take one step forward or one step backward without receiving direction from God. Listen, this is very important. You cannot act in faith without hearing from God.

When God speaks to us, sometimes we are listening, and then, on the other side of that coin, sometimes we are not listening.

I did a little experiment one time and, to tell you the truth, I was not surprised at what I learned. I stood at the entrance of a grocery store and asked people how they were doing. They usually responded with, "I am doing great." Then they would ask me how I was doing, and I said, "Well, I am not doing very good." They would respond with, "That’s good," and walk right on by me. Sometimes, we do not listen.

17 So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

I have learned a very powerful lesson by looking at the verse before and after the one God has brought to my attention.

We’ve Got a Trail to Blaze

Isaiah 40:3-5 (KJV)
3 "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 "Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5 "And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."

When Isaiah spoke these words, he was telling us about a man we call John the Baptist. Several scriptures proclaim this message: Malachi 3:1; Matthew 3:3; Mark 1:2-3; Luke 3:4; and John 1:23. The message was about repentance, the messenger was John the Baptist, and the message was about Jesus being the fulfillment of these prophets' words.

The message was simply this: “Prepare ye that way of the Lord. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God." The reason as one minister said was so that “the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together."

Arise, Shine

Isaiah 60:1-5 (ESV)
1 "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
2 "For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the people; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you.
3 "And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.
4 "Lift up your eyes all around and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from afar, and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.
5 "Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and exult, because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you..."

When it’s darkest, the glory of God's light shines brightest. We have talked to several friends over the last few days and found that a lot of them are in total fear about what they think tomorrow is going to bring. Let me say this to you: just mentioning Jesus's name can bring calm into the middle of a raging storm.

Testimony: My two brothers and I were caught up in a hurricane at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina once. During the storm, we were cooking steaks on the grill with no wind blowing across the backyard, but in the front yard, trees were being blown over onto cars. We were the only house in that whole subdivision that still had power throughout the entire storm.

We watched the "Back to the Future" series (1-3) as we joked about eating our Passover meal. The Lord's presence gave us peace, hope, and confidence that He was covering us with His hand of mercy.

Thank You, Father, for watching over us with Your favor and grace. Let Your glory, O Lord, rise among us. We ask this in Jesus's name. Amen.

Trust the Lord No Matter What

John 11:38-44 (NKJV)
Lazarus Raised from the Dead
38 "Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39 "Jesus said, 'Take away the stone.' Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, 'Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.'
40 "Jesus said to her, 'Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?'
41 "Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, 'Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
42 "'And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.'

I can hear the Lord speaking to us right now, at this moment, at this time in history, saying, “My children, stop saying that it’s too late. Did I not say to you that if you would believe you will see the glory of God? If I can raise a man from the grave after being dead four days, do you not trust the Lord, thy God, to deliver you out of the clutches of the death grip that has a choke hold on you today?"

Psalm 24:7 (KJV)
7 "Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; the King of glory shall come in."

Father, I will trust You no matter what. Keep me in remembrance of what Your word has said in the face of troubles. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.

Praise the Lord

1 "I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Testimony: I have sung this song for over 32 years as I minister behind the walls of many prisons in the State of Oklahoma and around the country. I may not have written this song, but I can tell you that I have lived it.

Something Had Changed

Isaiah 61:1 (ESV)
1 "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound."

I would have loved to have been there to see the look on the faces of all those that were in the synagogue that day when Jesus opened the scroll and found where it was written in Isaiah 61:1. Jesus stood up and spoke these words. Think about it, these words were spoken before but there was something different this time.

I’ve got good news, my friends, family, and all that are reading this devotion with me today. Jesus has, and is, and will continue to proclaim the good news to the poor. God sent Jesus to announce and proclaim freedom for the prisoners. To proclaim recovery or sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Luke 4:20-21 (KJV)
20 "And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister and sat down. And the eyes of all of them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 "And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears."

Dear Heavenly Father, I feel Your presence moving all across this globe with such a demonstration of power being released even now as we pray. Thank You for setting Your people free today. Thank You for healing the souls of men from the snare of the devil. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Take a Deep Breath

Colossians 3:15 (ESV)
15 "And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful."

Testimony: I felt an uneasiness within my spirit, and at 11:00 pm one night I told my wife that I needed to go down to my office to pray. It was just a short distance away from our house; I could walk there in less than five minutes.

I left the front door to my office open and while I was praying a car pulled up. A woman jumped out and ran into my office. She was hysterical and asked if she could use my phone to call an ambulance saying that her husband was out in the car struggling to breathe.

I called 911 for her and then went out to the vehicle to see how I might be able to assist. When I opened the door to the car, her husband was trying to catch his breath and was turning blue. I explained to him that the ambulance was on the way and would be there at any moment.

I asked him to try to take a deep breath and then let it out slowly. I was a newborn Christian and tried to start to tell him about Jesus several times, but the words would not come out of my mouth. I held his hand and told him, "Hey, look, I can see the lights of the ambulance. You are doing great. Just take another breath."

There was a restaurant supper club next to my office, and the waitresses tried to reassure him that they would take care of his car. He never took his eyes off of me and said, "No, I want him (talking about me) to do it." He would not let the people from the ambulance get him out of the car, so I lifted him and put him on the stretcher. His wife was getting into the ambulance and handed me the keys to their car. It was only then that I was able to say to her that I would be praying for them.

The church criticized me for not telling him about Jesus, saying that if he died, he would have gone straight to hell, and I felt terrible. Two days later they came by to pick up their car. His wife thanked me, saying that God had touched her husband that night.

Father, thank You for showing me that sometimes we need to show them Jesus. Thank You, Lord, for speaking to my heart and revealing to me that if I had mentioned the name of Jesus, the fear of dying would have taken him out. Father, forgive us for not trusting You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Find the Time to Rest in Him

Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)
28 "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest.
29 "Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

These verses describe the state that we find a lot of men and women all around the world in today. Stressed out to the max with all this covid stuff, and the threat of war that hovers over us. We must make a positive move toward Christ in order to find the rest we so desperately need.

When Jesus made this statement here, He saw how the religious leaders of that day would heap up spiritual duties for the people to perform. These same leaders could not, or would not, keep them but would impose them on the people. These rulers were a burden.

Luke 11:46 (NASB)
46 "But He said, “Woe to you lawyers as well! For you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers."

Thank You, Father, for Your word, which says that Your yoke is easy, and Your burden is light. For those who are in a constant, weary, and burdensome situation, You help them find rest for their soul. Help us find that place of peace and rest. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Committed to Serve the Lord

Proverbs 16:3 (ESV)
3 "Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established."

It is time for us to make decisions on the direction that we are going in this year. There will be many responsibilities to tend to, and with that comes lots of opportunities. So, let's get ready.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)
6 "Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

You cannot always do things your own way and think that God will bless your plans. You commit to serving God by doing it His way, and then your plans will become established.

Stay focused and set your mind on the Lord instead of the circumstances that are confronting you. Last night I had a dream where I saw many people that I have worked with throughout the years coming together in a large place. The stage was being set up for the worship and then preaching of the Word of God. I was getting excited with anticipation of the presence of the Lord in such a great way.

Father, there are so many things that are coming our way, and I desire to serve you. I give you my commitment to serve. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him.
