🎉 AGS Lecturer Honoree Spotlight: Steven L. Mansberger, MD, MPH

Chief and Chenoweth Chair of Ophthalmology, Legacy Devers Eye Institute; Director Glaucoma Services and Fellowship program, Legacy Devers Eye Institute; Senior Scientist, Discoveries in Sight, Legacy Health

Dr. Mansberger completed his ophthalmology residency at University of California, San Diego, and a glaucoma at DEI. He also earned an MPH in Biostatistics/Epidemiology. His research interests include cataract and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) on intraocular pressure, glaucoma functional and structural testing, and general and ocular epidemiology. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has continuously funded his research for 27 years. He is on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Glaucoma and American Journal of Ophthalmology. He has authored over 325 journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts.

AGS and AAO have released a joint position on disinfecting applanation tonometers:
Tonometers should be reclassified from semi-critical (requiring high-level disinfection) to non-critical (requiring low-level disinfection).

Alcohol wipes are sufficient for routine patients - patients without active infection or chronic viral disease. Single-use tips or high-level disinfection should still be used for non-routine patients.

Help us avoid the plastic waste and $150M/year cost of mass disposable-tip use.
Help us protect your instruments from damage that can occur with high-level disinfection.

AGS Update on Baerveldt: There are currently NO plans to discontinue the Baerveldt implant

J&J has affirmed the important role that these implants play in glaucoma care, especially for patients with complex needs and limited alternatives.

The company is optimizing manufacturing across all its products, and should any supply disruptions occur, J&J will notify AGS and its customers well in advance.

AGS leadership continues to be in conversation with J&J on this topic and will continue to keep AGS members updated.

AGS HUMANITARIAN AWARD HONOREE: Roger C. Furlong, MD, Medical Director, Eye Corps and Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah

Practiced for over 30 years providing specialty glaucoma care for patients in western Montana and northern Idaho. I began doing humanitarian work in 2007 with Moran Global Outreach Division and served since 2017 as Medical Director of Eye Corps. Eye Corps is dedicated to mentoring and equipping eye doctors in Tanzania to provide both comprehensive eye care as well as establish specialty glaucoma evaluation and treatment in very underserved and resource-poor regions.

Advice: It is tremendously satisfying and life-changing to provide care to those who would otherwise go without. There is not perfect time in life to get involved so start now.

AGS INNOVATOR HONOREE: Barbara Wirostko, MD FARVO, Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology, Moran Eye Center, and Biomedical Engineering, University of Utah

Dr. Barbara Wirostko is a glaucoma clinician-scientist globally recognized for her expertise in exfoliation glaucoma, IOP fluctuation, home tonometry, and drug development; she also serves as Clinical Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering at the Moran Eye Center, University of Utah. A fellow of the American Glaucoma Society, ARVO, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, she has held leadership roles across large pharma and small biotech, developing novel ophthalmic therapeutics as CMO and co-founder at Altheos, Jade, EyeGate, Qlaris, and MyEyes, and earlier as Senior Medical Director at Pfizer, where she oversaw the global Xalatan franchise. As a long time educator and advocate for innovation and improved ophthalmic care, she is the 2026 Chair of the ARVO Foundation Board, the first woman to hold that role, and a 2026 Visionary Award recipient from the Glaucoma Research Foundation and serves on the Ophthalmology Glaucoma editorial board.

Favorite quote, advice, comments: I want to thank all my mentors, my students, residents and fellows and most of all my patients. Without them I would not have had the learnings and career I have had.

My favorite quote is from Walt Disney - “It's kind of fun to do the impossible” The phrase reflects Disney's relentless drive to push creative and technical boundaries, treating grand challenges as exciting adventures rather than hard limits.

AGS LECTURER HONOREE: Linda Zangwill, PhD

Linda Zangwill, PhD is a Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Clinical Research at the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on advancing understanding of structural and functional change over time in the aging and glaucomatous eye; developing methods to improve detection of glaucoma in highly myopic eyes; and applying artificial intelligence techniques to identify individuals with glaucoma and those at highest risk of visual impairment. Dr. Zangwill also serves in leadership positions on the NIH-funded Bridge2AI AI-READI (AI Exploratory Atlas for Diabetes Insights) and AIM-AHEAD training programs, helping prepare the next generation of investigators to apply data science and artificial intelligence to improve disease detection and patient outcomes.

AGS HONOREE SPOTLIGHT: Ingeborg Stalmans, MD, PhD

Ingeborg Stalmans, MD, PhD, is Professor of Ophthalmology at KU Leuven and Head of the Glaucoma Service at University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium, and serves as Immediate Past President of the European Glaucoma Society. Her work focuses on improving glaucoma detection and treatment, with particular interests in artificial intelligence for screening and risk stratification, innovation in glaucoma surgery, and translating new evidence and technologies into practical, personalized care.
