Department chair isn't the only path to leadership in academic medicine. Ophthalmologists are increasingly stepping into CMO roles, dean's offices, hospital C-suites, and research leadership across entire academic medical centers.

Academic Medical Center Leadership: What Does It Take? brings together leaders who've made that jump to share what it actually takes to get there and how to lead effectively once you do.

Ophthalmology departments are uniquely positioned to lead change across entire health systems. High clinical volume, measurable outcomes, and fast-moving technology give this specialty a powerful platform for driving efficiency, quality, and innovation without losing sight of patient care.

This symposium covers emergency and inpatient ophthalmic care, OR patient safety frameworks, sustainability, and quality metrics, all through the lens of physician well-being.

Every surgeon knows the toll: hunched posture at the slit lamp, hours at the microscope, the fine motor demands of a full OR day. Sustaining the Surgeon tackles the ergonomic risks that threaten career longevity in ophthalmology and offers practical fixes for the clinic, the OR, and residency training itself.

Organized by AUPO's Program Directors Council, this session even pulls lessons from high-reliability industries outside medicine.

Sunday, October 11 | 8:00–9:15 AM | Room La Nouvelle Orleans AB

Depression, anxiety, and su***de risk touch physicians at every stage of training, but stigma still keeps many from asking for help. Join us at AAO 2026 for a candid look at physician mental health featuring keynote speaker Dr. Srijan Sen, a leading researcher in this field.

This symposium offers real strategies for recognizing struggling colleagues and building training environments where well-being is prioritized, not an afterthought.

Congratulations to Joel S. Schuman, MD, FACS, recipient of the 2027 RPB David F. Weeks Award for Outstanding Vision Research.

Dr. Schuman, of Wills Eye Hospital, is a pioneering inventor of optical coherence tomography (OCT), a technology that revolutionized ophthalmic care and remains a gold-standard tool in diagnosing glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He and his colleagues also identified the first molecular marker for human glaucoma, published in Nature Medicine in 2001.

The $70,000 Weeks Award, funded by Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) and an anonymous donor, recognizes outstanding vision researchers whose work has made a significant impact on the field. Dr. Schuman will receive the award and deliver a presentation at the AUPO 2027 Annual Meeting in Indian Wells, California.

Calling medical students AND the faculty who guide them!

AUPO and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are hosting a free webinar on the 2026–27 Ophthalmology Residency Match — designed for both aspiring ophthalmologists and the educators, mentors, and program directors supporting them through the process.

Wednesday, June 3
5:00 PM PT | 6:00 PM MT | 7:00 PM CT | 8:00 PM ET

A panel of ophthalmology educators will cover:
