Tร“RSHAVN, FAROE ISLANDS โ€” More than 700 dolphins were killed in the Faroe Islands yesterday [Wednesday], more than two-thirds of the approximately 1,000 marine mammals killed across the entirety of last year. Two Sea Shepherd crew members were arrested in the course of the events for documenting the hunts.

What happened in the Faroe Islands this week is difficult to comprehend on any humane level - over 700 Atlantic white-sided dolphins were driven ashore in coordinated drives at Tรณrshavn, Skรกlabotnur, and Hvalvรญk, then killed.

Among them were pregnant females and entire pods, all trapped after being herded into shallow water where escape was impossible. The scale alone is staggering, but itโ€™s the method that shocks most people - a practice that unfolds in full public view, yet continues to be defended by local authorities and tourism officials as tradition.

To many observers, this is no longer a question of culture versus criticism, but of whether any tradition can justify the mass killing of sentient marine mammals on this scale in the modern world.

๐Ÿ’” RIP Timmy The Whale. ๐Ÿ’”

"Timmy, the whale that stranded in the Baltic Sea on the Northern German coast, appears to have died. Was it a wasted effort to rescue one whale? I donโ€™t think so. It was a moment for people to care and to get involved.

There were those who said, leave the whale to die, that death was inevitable. Others rallied, some for different reasons, but what was encouraging was the publicโ€™s sentiment and concern. People cared and some cared enough to get involved, to try and physically do something to save Timmy.

And they almost did save Timmy. Unfortunately, the weeks of inaction, government bureaucracy, and the trauma of the rescue operations may have been too much. The whale may have also been suffering terminally from disease or possibly from a digestive system clogged by plastic. We donโ€™t know, as there has been no autopsy. What was important was the effort to save that whale.

As a result, Timmy did not die a painful, lingering death on the muddy shoreline of Germany. He died free in the sea with the knowledge that some humans cared enough to help. The rescue attempt received worldwide media attention, harnessing the media to focus attention and to make people think and become involved.

From the northern shores of Germany, the story of Timmy reached the ears of people around the globe. Millions cared.

What did caring for this one whale mean? Hopefully, it will translate into thinking about and being concerned for all whales, including the thousands that die in fishing nets every year." - Captain Paul Watson
