Portable and temporary swimming pools and spas are popular during the hot summer months, but water and electricity can be a dangerous combination. Any electrical equipment used near a pool or spa, including pumps, filters, heaters, or lighting, must be certified and specifically rated for pool/spa or outdoor use.

All pool or spa-related electrical equipment should be connected to a GFCI-protected circuit. GFCIs are designed to shut off power quickly if a fault is detected, significantly reducing the risk of electric shock.

Never use extension cords with pool or spa equipment unless explicitly permitted by the manufacturer. Uncertified or improperly connected equipment can energize the water without obvious warning, creating a serious life-safety hazard.

ICC-ES celebrated the grand opening of its newest state-of-the-art testing laboratory in Elkhart, Indiana, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the new 65,000-square-foot facility.

The facility houses advanced testing environments, including a weathering laboratory, new materials laboratory, large-scale structural testing laboratory, benchtop fire laboratory and several state-of-the-art testing spaces designed to meet the evolving needs of the construction and manufacturing industries.

The grand opening event included remarks from International Code Council (ICC) Chief Executive Officer John Belcik, ICC Board President Mike Boso and ICC-ES Executive Vice President David Tompos, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, guided facility tours and a reception.
