Brooklyn Heights, Ohio just welcomed their very first K-9 — and his name carries weight.

Meet K-9 Jake, the newest member of the Brooklyn Heights Police Department. Jake arrived August 31, 2026, and will be officially sworn in at the September 15 Village Council meeting.

He's named in honor of Officer Jacob Derbin of the Euclid Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on May 11, 2024. Officer Derbin's mother, Dawn Derbin, donated $2,500 to help make Jake's arrival possible.

"We're proud to carry on his name and memory through our K-9 program."

Brooklyn Heights' first K-9 carries one of law enforcement's most important traditions — the name of someone who fell in service, remembered in the work that continues.

On August 27, K-9 FiasKo and Master Corporal DiGati of the New Castle County Division of Police in Delaware got the call no one wants — and delivered the outcome every family prays for.

A nonverbal 6-year-old with special needs had gone missing at Brandywine Creek State Park. FiasKo, a Belgian Malinois, picked up the child's scent and tracked through heavily wooded brush toward a pond.

They found him. Barefoot, muddy, cold — but safe. He was reunited with his family that day.

FiasKo has been working with Master Corporal DiGati since 2021. Dense terrain, tight searches, no margin for error. This team was built for exactly this.

Job well done. 🐾

After five years on the job, K9 Onyx of the Appleton Police Department in Wisconsin is retiring — not because of anything he did wrong, but because his eyes gave out before the rest of him did. 🐾

Onyx was diagnosed with progressive retinal atrophy, a degenerative condition that caused him to go blind. He's otherwise completely healthy. His handler, Officer Joshua Rieth, noticed the signs: "I noticed it was kind of taking him two, three seconds longer to locate the toy, and occasionally we'd run into things."

Onyx will spend his retirement with Officer Rieth and his family, enjoying walks and all the attention he deserves. Rieth heads to New Mexico this September to begin training with a new K9 — funded entirely through community donations to the Appleton Police K9 Fund.

That's how this works. Departments that can't afford K9 equipment depend on community support. PPAK9 helps fill that gap.

With heavy hearts we share the passing of K9 Echo of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Iowa. 🐾

Echo died unexpectedly on Friday, August 28, following a sudden illness. He served the county for eight years alongside his handler, Deputy Jesse Lenz.

"Throughout his career, Echo's dedication, loyalty, and unwavering commitment made a lasting impact on our office and the community he served," the sheriff's office said.

Echo was not just a working K9 — he was a cherished member of Deputy Lenz's family and a beloved friend to everyone who worked alongside him.

Thank you for eight years of faithful service, Echo. 🐾

Meet MWD Mmoab, the 100th Security Forces Squadron's newest Military Working Dog at RAF Mildenhall. 🐾

Mmoab is a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois — and that double "M" in his name tells you exactly what he is. He's a Puppy Program dog, born and initially trained at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Just the fourth Puppy Program MWD ever assigned to this base.

He joined the unit in May 2025 and is now working alongside his new handler, Senior Airman Karina Flores, who said it best: "Because he's so driven, I know he's going to make me a better handler because of how much he wants to work."

Top speed over 30 mph. Bite force over 200 pounds. A nose 40 times more powerful than a human's. Military Working Dogs like Mmoab are vital assets — and they deserve the best protection.

K9 Maki of the Brenham Police Department in Texas is barely a year on the job, and she's already making a serious impact. 🐾

On August 14, 2026, Maki and her handler, Sgt. Jimmy Ha, made a routine traffic stop on US Highway 290. When Sgt. Ha noticed inconsistencies in the occupants' stories, he deployed Maki for an open-air sniff. She alerted immediately, and officers recovered nearly 40 pounds of methamphetamine. Three people now face felony charges.

The Brenham K9 program was rebuilt in late 2025 through community fundraising, and Maki has proven exactly why that investment matters.

K9s like Maki are why Project Paws Alive (PPAK9) works every day to get protective equipment to underfunded departments before they ever need it.

Great work, Maki and Sgt. Ha. 🐾

After more than seven years protecting the streets of Kinston, K9 Nero of the Kinston Police Department in North Carolina has earned his retirement. 🐾

Nero served alongside his first handler, Sgt. Lucas Miller, and most recently with Officer Candace Wilkins — a partnership built on trust, training, and countless hours of work that kept their community safer.

K9s like Nero give years of their lives to public service. Project Paws Alive (PPAK9) exists to make sure they're protected while they do it — with bullet/stab vests, first aid kits, vehicle heat alarms, and more for departments that can't cover the cost on their own.

Congratulations on your retirement, K9 Nero. Enjoy the well-earned rest. 🐾

Behind every great handler is an extraordinary partner with four paws. 🐾

They go where it’s too dangerous for humans. They don’t hesitate. They don’t quit. They just work.

On this , we honor every K9 team on duty today — and we hold close the ones who gave everything and didn’t come home.

PPAK9 exists because these dogs deserve the same protection they give us. If you believe that too:
