Sarasota Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc.

Sarasota Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. Greetings and Welcome to the Facebook of the Sarasota Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. It was a time characterized by racism and class ism.

Early in the last century, African-American students were actively discouraged from pursuing a college education. They had to overcome hard attitudes and rigorous obstacles in order to secure a diploma and participate in campus events. At times, they felt ostracized, like unwanted foreigners in their own land. Out of this dark time, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of Ind

iana University on January 5, 1911. On that night, ten men came together to form a bond of fraternity: Elder Watson Diggs, John Milton Lee, Byron K. Armstrong, Guy L. Grant, Ezra D. Alexander, Henry T. Asher, Marcus P. Blakemore, Paul W. Cain, Edward G. Irvin and George W. Edmonds. Kappa Alpha Psi was unique in that it was the only Greek Letter organization with its first Chapter on the Indiana University’s campus. The founders sought a formula that would immediately raise the sights of black collegians and stimulate them to accomplishments higher than they might have imagined. Placing God first in their hearts, the men of Kappa Alpha Psi set ACHIEVEMENT in every field of human endeavor as it’s purpose, uniting college men of culture, patriotism and honor in a bond of fraternity. Kappa Alpha Psi is headed by its Grand Chapter officers and Grand Board of Directors. William “Randy” Bates, Jr., Esq. is the Grand Pole march. There are 12 provinces that govern the undergraduate and alumni chapters. Sarasota Alumni Chapter is a part of the Southern Province, which encompasses, Florida, Alabama, the Bahamas, Rep. of Panama and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
