Diakon Wilderness Greenhouse

Diakon Wilderness Greenhouse We grow and sell native perennials! The Wilderness Greenhouse provides a space for students to learn, grow and hone skills for future successes.

The Wilderness Greenhouse is a teaching nursery with a focus on growing native plants to improve habitat, protect water, and make our communities more resilient. Our students represent a diverse population of youth from Central Pennsylvania, each working to build skills and identify tools to overcome barriers and become healthy contributing members of society. Our program is part of Diakon Luthera

n Social Ministries, Youth Services, a nonprofit organization that has been serving at risk youth for almost 30 years. The plants we grow are uniquely suited to our specific climate and growing conditions. They tend to be resilient, disease resistant, and support healthy biodiverse ecosystems. They are used extensively in habitat restoration projects, in plantings designed to encourage and support wildlife, in the protection of local rivers and streams, and to improve the quality of the communities we live in. Proceeds from our nursery benefit Diakon’s work with children and families. Please reach out if you are interested in volunteer opportunities. We look forward to seeing you at the nursery!

Did you know this is National Volunteer Appreciation Week?? The Wilderness Greenhouse simply WOULD NOT BE without our volunteers. Each spring, dozens of you give your time, energy and expertise as we work to get plants ready for spring sales and prepare our nursery for the season.

Working alongside our volunteers is one of my favorite parts of my job. I love the positive support this learning community brings to help us continue our work both as a teaching nursery and as a resource for native plants in our region. You all are the best and we are so grateful! 💛

Want to get involved? We are still looking for a few volunteers this Thursday and Friday. We will be helping tag plants, putting up id cards, making sure price tags are in place….Not glamorous work I’m afraid, but necessary!! We are also looking for a few extra hands on Saturday afternoon for our first sale day!!

If you think you might have some time to give, we’d love to see you on the mountain!!

Dr. King believed in the power of ordinary people doing good work.

Today and every day, let's honor that by continuing to serve our neighbors with care, respect, and compassion.

Don’t miss this year’s Holiday Pop-up Shop going on now thru Thursday!

These Critters Cages, hand-made by our students, are sturdy and spacious, perfect for raising monarchs or other butterflies thru the growing season! Make it a themed gift by pairing with our milkweed seed balls and a gift card to the Wilderness Greenhouse’s Native Plant Nursery.

These and other small gift items for the gardener or wildlife enthusiast are available in our online store for a short time! Don’t miss them! 🌱

Back in October, as things were winding down at the nursery, we became the very lucky recipients of some beautiful winter vegetable starts donated by Quality Greenhouses & Perennial Farm in Dillsburg, PA.

Our intention was to grow these veggies out with our students for fall and winter harvest, making use of extra protected production space to grow some food for our community.

This week we dropped off our second harvest of lettuces at Project Share in Carlisle (I think weve dropped off nearly 125 heads to date.) Future harvests will include arugula, beets, and kale.

Our refreshed Diakon logo officially launched! While the look is new, our mission and values remain the same.

Why the change? Because first impressions matter. We’ve heard from people who are unsure if Diakon was open to them because of their faith background. The truth is, we’ve always been here for everyone—children, youth, families, adults, and seniors from all walks of life.

This update follows months of thoughtful planning, including professional design feedback and final approval from our Board of Directors. Our new design, with its welcoming starburst, is a symbol of hope shining bright and a promise that all are welcome. Each of our programs also has an updated logo that connects back to our Diakon brand, showing we are one united mission.

As you begin to see this new look across signs and materials, remember what hasn’t changed - our heart for serving people and offering help and hope to all.🔅
