UpRoot Center UpRoot is a new organization dedicated to reclaiming the story of our food from Big Ag.

Farmers are asking for a different food system. That part is clear.

But real change means more than putting a new label on old programs while the corporations controlling our food system keep gaining power.

We can celebrate farmers choosing a different path AND demand policies that actually help them get there.

Follow as we expose who really holds the power in our food system — and what it will take to change it.

You shouldn’t need a policy degree to understand where your food comes from.

But the system between the farm and your plate is complicated enough that most of us never get a clear picture of who grows our food, who processes it, who sets the price, who writes the rules — and who profits.

That complexity benefits the people with the most power.

We’re here to make the food system easier to understand, because once you can see how it works, you can start asking better questions about who it’s working for.

Follow UpRoot for food-system news and context without the jargon.

It's not just a buzzword. For independent farmers, corporate control is a daily reality that dictates:

🌱 What seeds and supplies they can buy.
🛒 Where they're allowed to sell their products.
🥗 Which foods you get (and don't get) to see at the grocery store.

When a handful of companies control the entire supply chain, it squeezes out the people who actually grow our food in a better way.

Every bite of food has a story. For factory-farmed products, that story is often one of injustice.

From the concentrated animal feeding operations to the exploited farm workers, there's a chain of suffering hidden from the consumer. As says, if we could taste that reality, the industry would collapse overnight.
What's one part of the food story you wish more people knew?

The problem isn’t farmers.

It’s a food system where more and more power sits with the corporations controlling the contracts, processing, distribution, and policy around them.

Family farmers shouldn’t be used as the face of a system they often don’t control.

If we want a healthier, more humane, more resilient food system, we have to stop blaming the people closest to the land — and start following where the power actually sits.

Follow as we expose who’s really controlling our food system.

This is why we started UpRoot.

The food system is complex, but the solution starts with a simple, shared value: everyone deserves healthy, affordable food.

We're here to expose the problems in the corporatized food system and lift up the farmers and communities building a better one. It's not a consumer vs. farmer issue: it's a human issue.

Join us as we work to build a food system that serves us all.

Climate change is hitting America’s orchards hard. But the damage doesn’t stop with the weather.

Decades of consolidation have left farmers with fewer varieties, fewer growing regions, and fewer options when conditions change. In other words: we’ve built a food system with very little room for something to go wrong.

And now something is going wrong.

When corporate control makes our food system less resilient, farmers lose, consumers lose, and eventually the food on our shelves does too.

It’s everywhere. From the seeds in the ground to the barcode at checkout, a handful of corporations have a large say in what you eat.

This isn't just about brands on a shelf—it's about the illusion of choice. It squeezes out independent farmers and limits our access to truly nourishing food.

Hope you didn’t spend too much money on that recalled beef…oh wait 😳

Another recall. Another reason to ask: do you actually know where your food comes from?

We’re paying more at the grocery store while a handful of powerful corporations dominate the food system and consumers are still left with less transparency about what’s actually on our plates.

Knowing who grows and produces our food shouldn’t be too much to ask.

Follow as we expose who controls our food system and what it means for you.

He sent their kids to a nature school on a restored prairie. And he never expected them to have to run from poison.

A school surrounded by nature should be a sanctuary. But when that sanctuary is bordered by industrial agriculture, the lines get blurred.

This is the reality for too many communities. The chemical drift from nearby fields is so thick that children can taste and smell it, forcing them inside for their own safety.

This isn't an abstract policy debate; it's about the health of our kids. Our broken food system is putting them on the front lines.
