The WELL Collaborative that Susan co-directs with Dr. Charles Haynes launched the Writing in the Schools Exchange (WISE) Project, a research-practice partnership that continues to bring evidence-based, structured writing instruction into classrooms across multiple Massachusetts school districts.

With a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology and decades of clinical, teaching, and research experience in reading and writing disorders, Susan brings both deep expertise and real classroom insight to this session.

👋 Meet your presenter: Susan Lambrecht Smith, Ph.D., CCC-SLP.
Susan is an Associate Professor in the Speech-Language Pathology Program at Mercy University, with more than 28 years of combined experience as a speech-language pathologist and higher education instructor. Alongside her longtime colleague Charles Haynes, Ed.D., she co-founded the Written Language and Literacy (WELL) Collaborative, which began as an intensive summer writing clinic for students in the Boston area.
That work has grown into something even bigger, and we'll share more about it soon. 👀

✍️ What is Structured Literacy for Writing (SL-W)?

Rather than treating writing as an isolated skill, SL-W integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing through systematic, cumulative, explicit, and multisensory instruction. Students learn practical strategies that support writing at the word, sentence, micro-discourse, and text levels, using topical vocabulary and concepts drawn from meaningful, topic-centered language activities.
Importantly, SL-W isn't a commercial program. It's an instructional framework any educator can bring into their classroom.
