A BIG thank you to Spencer Torkelson, first baseman for the Detroit Tigers, and his wife Makenna for their incredible generosity in donating New Balance gear to Serving Up Hope!

While baseball and tennis may look different on the surface, both sports are built around the same things: footwork, coordination, athleticism, focus and the confidence that comes from having the right gear and the opportunity to compete.

Thanks to Spencer’s generosity, players in Uganda are getting outfitted with quality New Balance gear that can help them step onto the court with confidence and chase their dreams!

Serving Up Hope is looking for passionate volunteers who want to help create opportunities for underserved youth through tennis.

There are lots of ways to get involved—including regional volunteer program coordinators, fundraising, and marketing committee roles. Whether you love tennis, have nonprofit or community experience, know your way around fundraising or have creative and marketing skills, there may be a place for you on our team.

Our volunteers help us bring programs to life, support coaches and mentors, connect with communities, organize events, share our story, and build the resources that make our work possible.

At Serving Up Hope, we believe every young person should have access to opportunity—regardless of their circumstances. That’s why our programs, training, and competitions are provided free of charge to players and coaches in the U.S. and Uganda.

But keeping those opportunities free takes more than a great program. It takes consistent support.

When you become a monthly donor, your generosity provides the reliable foundation we need to keep showing up for our players and coaches in the U.S. and Uganda. Your monthly support helps provide:

🎾 Free tennis programs, training and competitions
🍎 Meals, clean drinking water and snacks
🎓 Academic scholarships and school fees
🔬 STEM education
💪 Female mentorship
⚖️ Legal education
🚌 Transportation
🏟️ Court maintenance and other essential operating costs

Monthly donors make it possible for us to plan ahead, respond to needs, and continue investing in young people—not just today, but throughout the year.

Join us in serving up hope, one month at a time. Become a monthly donor today: www.servinguphope.org/donate.

This week, Serving Up Hope's very own Lillian Ayee will be in Tanzania representing Uganda at the upcoming international junior competition.

Lillian is currently our top-performing girl and one of Uganda’s leading Under-16 players. Her journey is a powerful reflection of what can happen when talent is met with dedicated coaching, consistent training and the right opportunities.

We are incredibly proud to see a young girl who has been nurtured through tennis now stepping onto an international stage and proudly representing her country.

Go Lillian! We are behind you all the way!

From Acholi Quarters to the National Stage 🎾🌍

Meet three of our high-performance players currently representing their schools at the East Africa Secondary School Games in Morogoro, Tanzania:

🇺🇬 Edmond Lagara— Seroma Christian High School
🇺🇬 Olivia Natukunda— KIBULI Moslem Secondary School
🇺🇬 Angelo Matovu — Seroma Christian High School

All three are Serving Up Hope high-performance players and scholarship recipients in their respective schools, made possible through their dedication to tennis and the opportunities created through consistent coaching, nurturing and support.

What makes this moment especially powerful is where their journey began: Acholi Quarters.

To see children from a community where access to opportunity can be such a significant barrier now earning scholarships at excellent Ugandan secondary schools, representing their country and competing on the East African stage through tennis, is nothing short of incredible.

Tennis is often seen as one of the sports with the highest barriers to entry., but these young athletes are showing what is possible when talent meets diligent nurturing, quality training, belief and opportunity.
