Hey, '80's alums - Where you at?

A group of Commonwealth University–Bloomsburg Computer Science students recently took first place at the CCSC Eastern Collegiate Programming Contest.

Ryan Hricenak and Stephanie Flores, competing as the “Bloomsburg Bombers,” faced 34 teams from across Pennsylvania, including Villanova and West Chester Universities.

“The competition gave us a packet of problems that we had to solve using Java,” Hricenak said. “Teams had less than four hours to write programs that matched the required input and output exactly. We were able to solve six of the eight problems, which put us at the top. Preparation played a big role.”

Their performance highlighted not only their technical abilities, but the Transferrable skills necessary to succeed in ANY professional environment - work ethic, preparation, teamwork, staying calm under pressure, and time management are valuable skills that help new grads stand out in a highly competitive field.

On this day in History: June 4, 1926

100 years ago today, the State Council of Education authorized eight state normal schools, including Bloomsburg, to confer the Bachelor of Science degree in Education. This was the first four-year degree Bloomsburg was able to grant and would remain so until the 1960s. The school was officially renamed the Bloomsburg State Teachers College on May 13 the following year.

Over the last century, we've been Bloomsburg State Normal School, Bloomsburg State Teachers College, Bloomsburg State College, Bloomsburg University, and University-Bloomsburg. The names may have changed but our grit, determination, commitment to education, and remains the same.

Shout out to all the education majors from last century's Class of 1926 to last month's Class of 2026 - your legacy (and ours) lives on in your students, past and present.
